Kolding Municipality: Nature, Coast and Culture

In Kolding Municipality, Kolding is part of Lillebælt Nature Park, a marine nature park with one of the densest harbour porpoise populations in the world.

Nature and Trails

Hylkedalen is characterised by a dramatic Ice Age landscape with steep slopes; at the bottom of the valley, the Seest Mølleå meanders through the steep grasslands. Several paths and routes for walkers, runners and mountain bikers start at the Trailcenter Seest-Hylkedalen in Seest Idrætspark. There are toilets, water, changing rooms and showers. Hylkedalen is home to the rare birch mouse, kingfishers and green woodpeckers, as well as a diverse range of plants, fungi and insects. The mountain bike trail is 3.2 kilometres long, has around 85 metres of elevation gain and includes a descent of just over 600 metres.

Hartesløjfen is a 12-kilometre cycling and hiking route connecting Ferup Sø with Harteværket. It passes through a landscape of lakes, streams and canals and includes a cable ferry across Ferup Sø and an exhibition in the old lock house. Troldhedestien follows a former railway line from Kolding towards Ferup and Kirsbøl through forests and past beautiful viewpoints.

Marielundskoven has paths and routes for hiking, cycling and horse riding, as well as opportunities for fishing and orienteering. The forest encompasses Marielundsøen, surrounded by beech trees, diverse wildlife and rare fungi. Kongeåstien is a 71-kilometre marked hiking route with ten stages, shelters and experiences relating to nature and cultural history.

Coast and Landscape

Stenderup Skovene is home to oaks more than 500 years old and a diverse birdlife. Løverodde is a bathing beach on the Little Belt and part of Stenderup Skovene.

Hejlsminde Beach is a gently sloping sandy beach awarded the Blue Flag, with a bathing jetty, a ramp into the water, a kiosk and toilets. The route around Hejlsminde Nor passes through a unique natural area with white-tailed eagles, marsh harriers and orchids in bloom in early summer.

Skamlingsbanken is an Ice Age landscape shaped by glaciers, with steep slopes, deep ravines and views across the Little Belt.

Culture and History

Koldinghus is a castle more than 750 years old that served as a medieval fortress, Renaissance palace and royal residence. Koldinghus displays porcelain from the Flora Danica series. Christian IV's Tower at Koldinghus offers impressive views of the surrounding area.

Trapholt is a museum of modern art, crafts and design with a sculpture park on Kolding Fjord. It also houses Arne Jacobsen's unique Kubeflex summer house, furnished with his own designs. Trapholt is temporarily closed for renovation work and is expected to reopen in spring 2027.

Since the mid-19th century, Skamlingsbanken has held special significance as a national speakers' platform. The Skamlingsbanken Visitor Centre, operated by Museum Kolding, includes an exhibition, a café, a museum shop and toilets.

The Moravian Church that continues to exist in Christiansfeld bears witness to a unique cultural tradition and history. Christinero near Christiansfeld is a historic garden complex with paths, benches and small lakes.

Leisure Spots

Legeparken near Kolding city centre offers a large playground, Mooncars and pedal boats. It also has picnic shelters, public toilets, a kiosk and four barbecue areas. Dybvadbro Station is a green meeting place for outdoor activities and was the first station on the private railway that connected Kolding with Troldhede.
