Repino on the Gulf of Finland
Accommodation in Repino
The Penaty Museum Estate (Penaty) is located in Repino on the shore of the Gulf of Finland and is one of the Kurortny District’s main attractions. Art and local history give the destination a special focus; there is also a children’s playground with sea views at a beach in Repino. If you are planning a trip, you can decide whether you would rather focus on the artist’s estate, the history of the area or the beach.
Art and everyday life at the Penaty Estate
Visitors can explore the painter’s living and working rooms. The historic layout brings different aspects of the house to life: the ground floor had a sculpture workshop, while the living quarters, with a study, salon and dining room, were upstairs. The museum’s collection includes paintings, sketches, drawings, graphic works and sculptures by Ilya Repin. The estate can thus be explored both through the rooms where the artist lived and worked and through the different forms of his work.
The estate includes a memorial park, which visitors can also explore. Art exhibitions about the painter’s life and work are held there regularly. The grounds are also home to the Khram Ozirisa i Izidy pavilion: built in 1906, it served as a venue for lectures and house concerts during Repin’s lifetime. The rooms, park and pavilion represent different aspects of the estate. Check the current access conditions before your visit.
Repino’s history and name
Repin lived in Repino for 30 years, where he also died and was buried. The settlement was named after the Russian artist in 1948. Before that, the settlement was called Kuokkala in Finnish; the name means “fishhook.” The name of the estate also points to an earlier history: Penaty is named after the Roman household gods who protected the hearth. The artist’s name, the former Finnish place name and the meaning of Penaty are distinct historical references that can be considered separately when learning about the area.
The park and beach offer other points of interest
In addition to the museum estate, the area’s history offers another point of interest: Central Park on Nagornaya Street was laid out on the site of Rodinger’s dacha. This connection to the former property gives the park its own historical dimension. A children’s playground with sea views is located at a beach in Repino. If you would also like to include a playground in your trip plans, you can consider this spot alongside the destination’s art and history. These different areas of interest can help you decide what matters most to you during your stay without combining them into a single itinerary.
Check transport connections
The listed connections include a suburban train to Repino station and bus routes 211E, 211 and 600 from Begovaya Metro Station to the Repino - Tsentr stop. A suburban train runs from Finland Station to Repino; the journey is estimated to take around 50 minutes. This approximate duration is useful for planning, but does not replace checking the current connection. Check the timetable and service before departure.
