Dalarö – Cultural History and Water Experiences

Dalarö combines maritime history with special experiences on and around the water. The town is a former pilotage and customs community and became a holiday resort for wealthy Stockholm residents at the end of the 19th century. If you would like to combine historic townscapes, listed buildings, cultural activities or water activities on your trip, Dalarö offers several clearly distinguishable points of interest for this purpose.

Historic Dalarö between pilotage and villa architecture

The architectural heritage includes many richly decorated wooden villas from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Dalarö tullhus is a listed historic building owned by the state and also the starting point for guided cultural walks in Dalarö. These walks are offered for groups of 10 to 50 people and begin at Dalarö tullhus.

Another historic landmark is Dalarö kyrka. It dates from 1652 and acquired its present appearance in 1787. Particularly noteworthy is the pulpit decorated with inlays: the cabinetmaker Melcherdt made it in 1630, and it originally stood in Tyresö kapell. The church therefore offers an opportunity to examine not only the development of the building but also an older piece of interior furnishing.

The town’s history also includes a memorial sculpture for people who left their home countries in the Baltic region during the Second World War. In 1944, 150 people arrived in Dalarö aboard a two-masted vessel. A public work of art was erected in 2004 on the waterfront promenade below Dalarö tullhus, complementing the historic sites with a more recent cultural point of reference.

Dalarö skans and the maritime visitor experience

Dalarö skans is located on Stockskäret outside Dalarö. Since the 17th century, the site has served as a fortification guarding the southern approach to Stockholm. The public can reach Dalarö skans by private boat or on services operated by Waxholmsbolaget. The site is therefore a destination in its own right, where the documented ways of getting there are already part of the experience.

Dalarö skeppsvraksområde is also aimed at visitors who want to explore maritime history beneath the surface of the water. Three representative wrecks have been made accessible to visitors there. All dives in Dalarö skeppsvraksområde must take place from a boat. In addition, for each dive, a diving operator must apply through Dalarö Dykpark for permission to moor at the buoy. Those planning this activity will therefore find a clearly defined form of visit involving a boat and a permit.

Water activities, cultural walks or a training route

Dalarö offers a wide range of water activities at Schweizerbadet and Askfatshamnen. These two locations are therefore suitable starting points when water experiences are to be the focus of your stay. For a culturally oriented activity, by contrast, the guided cultural walks starting at Dalarö tullhus and the historic townscape take centre stage.

For exercise on land, Dalarö IP has two routes of different lengths: a 1.25 km illuminated loop and a 10 km training route. The two distances make it easy to distinguish between a short loop and a longer training route, without requiring any additional characteristics of the terrain.
