Muskö

Muskö combines maritime history with a varied landscape of coastal meadows, rocks and wetlands. Cultural history around Grytholmen and Muskö Church

The Grytholmen open-air museum showcases a preserved crofter’s cottage from the 19th century and tells the story of life among the island crofters. The history of the site goes back further: in the 1840s, Grytholmen became a crofter’s cottage under the Arbottna estate. During the summer season, the open-air museum is open to visitors; Grytholmsdagen is also held on Muskö every summer. Another historical point of interest is Muskö Church. The present building was inaugurated in 1630 and is protected under Chapter 4 of the Swedish Cultural Heritage Act. West of the church, on a small hill, stands a bell tower from the 17th century. The church and bell tower thus represent two distinct examples of the area’s architectural and religious history, which can be experienced together when exploring Muskö.

Maritime History and Getting There

Muskö has been home to a naval base since the 16th century. The waterway through the area also has a historical background: a canal dug during the Russian devastation raids of 1719 is now a popular waterway. These two facts give Muskö a maritime character that extends beyond individual attractions.

Getting there is defined by the three-kilometre-long road tunnel beneath the sea. The “Muskötunneln” opened in 1964 and was the longest tunnel in Sweden at the time. If you are travelling without a car, buses operate on Muskö and provide connections to commuter trains in Ösmo. This means that both the tunnel connection and a documented bus service are available for travel planning, without implying any specific journey times or a particular connection.

Coastal Meadows, Rocks and Bird Areas

The landscape offers several different highlights. In Arbottna, there are grazed coastal meadows of high natural value. In Bruket, you will find a pebble beach and the surrounding rocks. The Maren wetland is considered a bird sanctuary and complements the more open coastal landscape with a habitat shaped particularly by its birdlife.

Muskö also has flowering coastal meadows that can be explored on foot. For active days in nature, this type of landscape can therefore be experienced differently from Bruket’s pebble beach or the Maren wetland.
