Norrtälje – Harbour, Culture and Nature

Norrtälje combines a harbour on the Norrtäljeån with historic urban culture and varied nature experiences. Anyone looking for accommodation for a stay involving walks, art, industrial history or excursions to the water will find various points of interest in the town. Art and Urban History Along the Norrtäljeån

A recurring summer event is Konst i Ån, an exhibition of contemporary art in Norrtälje’s public spaces. The works are displayed along the Norrtäljeån and throughout the townscape. This connects the river area with the urban walking tour without limiting the exhibition to a single venue.

The Åpromenaden is a cultural and historical walking route along the Norrtäljeån. 36 signs provide information about historic places in the town. The route is approximately 3 kilometres long and runs from Lake Lommaren to the mouth of the Norrtäljeån at Norrtälje harbour. Recorded audio contributions supplement the information along the walking route. This makes it possible to explore the town’s history not only through individual buildings but also through the course of the river.

The preserved 18th-century buildings in Norrtälje include the Wallinska gårdarna. Contemporary art, meanwhile, is the focus of Norrtälje konsthall, where works by local, Swedish and international artists are presented. Together with the Åpromenaden, this creates a cultural hub that places historic architecture and contemporary art side by side.

Industrial History with Different Ways to Explore It

The Pythagoras Industrial Museum preserves a fully intact former hot-bulb engine factory, including its office and workers’ accommodation, as an industrial museum in Norrtälje. Guided tours are available. The former factory is therefore preserved not only as a group of buildings but is also presented through its work and living areas.

The museum also includes Barnens Pythagoras, where the original engine factory is presented in a child-friendly way. The former smithy now houses a café and a souvenir shop. Thus, in addition to industrial history, the museum site includes a dedicated area for younger visitors and practical stopping points during a visit.

Another historical feature is Norrtälje Church. It is said to have been Sweden’s first church with electric lighting; 202 lamps were installed there in 1902. The cautious wording is part of the tradition surrounding this feature and should be retained when interpreting the church.

Nature and Viewpoints Close to Town

The Vigelsjö Nature Reserve is located directly beside the town of Norrtälje. The Municipality of Norrtälje established it in 1998 to preserve a natural area close to town for recreational purposes.

South of the centre lies Södra Bergen, a wooded hill area with views over the town’s rooftops, the harbour entrance, lakes and the surrounding landscape. From Idrottsvägen, an adapted path with improved accessibility leads to a viewpoint. The path is therefore explicitly described as adapted, not as fully accessible.

Close to the centre, Borgmästarholmen offers walking opportunities, varied nature and designated barbecue areas. The island has a diverse bird population all year round, including goldcrests and white-tailed eagles; otters are also regularly seen there. The combination of walking paths, nature observation and barbecue areas makes it suitable for a stay in which not only sights but also longer periods outdoors play a role.

Farm Life, Beach and Paths by the Water

Färsna gård is located near the town centre and offers animals, tractors, cultivated areas, as well as play and recreation areas in a farm setting. Visitors can walk and be active in nature on the grounds. Tupplidret houses the farm café and a rest hut. The farm complements the town’s museums and waterside paths with an agricultural setting.

Kärleksudden is a centrally located beach in Norrtälje between Norrtäljeviken and Kvisthamraviken. The sandy beach is approximately 50 metres long. Stage 7 of the Roslagsleden also runs through the residential area of Kvisthamra in the town on the way to Kärleksudden. From there, the Roslagsleden follows the waterfront promenade into the central areas of Norrtälje. The beach and the hiking trail thus provide two clearly distinct ways of accessing the water: one via the bathing area, the other via a signposted stage and the waterfront promenade.

Summer Connections from the Harbour

During the summer months, the archipelago boat services Norra Båtlinjen, Nord/Sydlinjen and S/S Blidösund operate from Norrtälje harbour. Anyone wishing to include the maritime side of the region in their travel plans can consider these services as a separate part of their summer stay.
