Nykvarn between hiking trails, lakes and Swedish history
Turingeleden is a 3.8-kilometre-long, orange-marked hiking trail along the southern shore of Lake Turingen in Nykvarn. The town of Nykvarn itself is also part of the surrounding travel area.
Hiking and water
The full loop in Jägarskogen is 3 kilometres long; the section suitable for pushchairs is 1.5 kilometres long, while the western “Strandstigen” is approximately 0.7 kilometres long. The connecting section of the Sörmlandsleden begins about 100 metres west of Nykvarn railway station and leads through old-growth forest to northern Yngern. After about 6 kilometres, it reaches Sandtorpsbadet.
On the northern shore of Yngern, Jägarskogen Nature Reserve offers marked circular trails, a place for swimming, a lakeside barbecue area and a wind shelter. The stated purpose of the reserve is to preserve and further develop a diverse forest with high natural values and great importance for local recreation. Lake Yngern is deep, large and highly irregular in shape, offering numerous fishing spots.
The area can also be explored on the water via a 27-kilometre canoe route from Åkers Styckebruk to Nykvarn. The route is easy to paddle and includes seven portages; the longest is 700 metres long. It runs via Visnaren, the Marviken lakes, Klämmingen, Stora and Lilla Kvarnsjön, and Gullsmorasjön to Lake Yngern.
Nature
Björkviksmossen Nature Reserve in Nykvarn Municipality has been protected since 1996 and covers 15 hectares. Björkviksmossen is a small pine bog surrounded by coniferous forest with a natural character and is home to species worthy of protection that are listed on the Red List.
Culture and history
The oldest part of Turinge Church dates from the 12th century. The church contains a funerary chapel designed by Erik Dahlbergh, regarded as one of Sweden’s more significant Baroque monuments. In the vestibule stands a 10th-century runestone with one of the longest inscriptions in Södermanland.
The present main building of Taxinge Castle was constructed between 1806 and 1813 and has undergone no major alterations since then. Smedsbygget is a local heritage museum in a former residence for the estate’s smiths and presents exhibitions on local history. A monument in Nykvarn refers to a person’s former estates and was erected on the occasion of that person’s 300th birthday.
