Upplands-Bro: Nature, Trails and Culture

The 60-metre-high Rösaring esker is home to an archaeological site overlooking Lake Mälaren. Stäksön is also home to Almare-Stäket, Sweden’s largest medieval castle ruin.

Nature

The Rösaringsåsen Nature Reserve is a Natura 2000 site with rare plants and insects. The same protected area contains Bronze Age and Iron Age remains, including burial grounds, a 500-metre-long processional route and several stone-lined labyrinths.

The Lejondal Nature Reserve comprises grazed meadows and old woodland; berries, mushrooms and wildlife can be found there. Stäketskogen protects a very old, primeval-looking forest with endangered insects, wood-decay fungi and glacial moraine ridges. A yellow-marked trail leads to a viewpoint above the railway tunnel, where there is a bench.

The Broängarna Nature Reserve is home to 233 recorded bird species, a birdwatching tower and a three-kilometre nature and cultural trail.

Trails

You can reach the Rösaringsåsen Nature Reserve by bus to Låssa kyrka, followed by an approximately 1.6-kilometre walk to the reserve’s car park. The Lejondal Nature Reserve can be reached from Bro station by bus to the Rosendal stop, followed by an approximately two-kilometre walk.

Stäketskogen can be reached by commuter train to Kungsängen station, followed by an approximately one-kilometre walk to Dalkarlsbacken. Broängarna is served by bus route 555; the stops are approximately 500 to 1,100 metres from the reserve.

Låssaleden is a hiking trail on Låssalandet measuring 13.5 kilometres in total. The Lennartsnäs peninsula has 35 kilometres of marked riding trails.

The 29-kilometre Upplands-Broleden passes through grazed pastures, along beautiful gravel roads and through rocky pine forests with lake views, and is suitable for hiking or cycling. Its orange-marked hiking section runs through the Lejondal, Stäketskogen, Frölunda and Broängarna nature reserves. Mälardalsleden is one of Sweden’s oldest cycle touring routes.

Activities

Accropark Bro near Hällkana is a high-ropes course with several circuits at different heights and levels of difficulty. At Lillsjön there is an 18-basket disc golf course where Brunna Frisbeeklubb trains and holds competitions.

At Lillsjön beach, there is an underwater snorkelling trail with eight information boards at a depth of one to three metres. Hällkana beach on Lake Lejondalssjön has bathing jetties, several barbecue areas and an accessible barbecue shelter.

Canoes can be rented at Hällkana for paddling trips on Lake Lejondalssjön when a club or school rents the recreation centre. The Lejondal Nature Reserve has a wind shelter that anyone may use for overnight stays outdoors.

The Lejondal Nature Reserve has an ice-skating loop prepared in winter and groomed ski tracks.

Culture

Rösaring has a car park, an information board and the start of a hiking trail over the esker to the labyrinth. Rösaring is an archaeological site featuring a Viking Age processional route, burial mounds, stone cairns and a large stone labyrinth.

Along the Upplands-Broleden, information boards describe Bronze Age stone burial mounds, the construction of old roads and Stäket Castle. The road museum on Stäksön displays examples of roads from the 17th and 19th centuries.

Bro kyrka–Husby–Assurstenen is designated as a cultural site with information boards on site. Funkisfestivalen takes place in Upplands-Bro every January.
