Vallentuna: Runes, Nature Trails and Culture
A Latin missal written in 1198 from Vallentuna Church is the oldest surviving Swedish book. Vallentuna Church was built mainly from grey stone sometime between 1150 and 1250; there are various types of runic inscriptions in and on the church.
History
Runriket comprises nine cultural and historical sites around Lake Vallentuna in Täby and Vallentuna. The prehistoric monuments are clearly signposted, and information boards explain their history. From Jarlabankes bro as a starting point, you can visit parts of Runriket by bicycle, on foot and by public transport.
Culture
The Konstkuben at Vallentuna Kulturhus hosts art exhibitions featuring professional artists, organized by Vallentuna Municipality and the Vallentuna Art Association. The Pattern Parade is a permanent work of art at Vallentuna Kulturhus. Kultur Vallentuna organizes, produces or rents the exhibitions shown in the Utställningsrummet.
Cultural lunches and jazz concerts take place in the Kulturrummet. It also hosts performances by students of the Culture School as well as art exhibitions. Vallentuna Teater offers concerts, current cinema films, theatre performances, Live on Bio events, lectures and other offerings.
Nature
In terms of physical geography, Vallentuna belongs to the central Swedish valley landscape, with clay-filled valley depressions and mountain heights covered by moraine. The Björkby-Kyrkviken nature reserve lies near the centre of Vallentuna and is characterized by an open cultural landscape. Tufted ducks and mallards, among other species, breed at Kyrkviken. There are numerous benches and several rest areas along the waterfront promenade at Björkby-Kyrkviken.
The Veda Nature Trail passes through a varied forest landscape by Storsjön. Boardwalks lead through the swamp forest, where changing water levels create the conditions for rich biological diversity. The Veda Nature Trail is about 5 kilometres long and has a shorter loop of approximately 4.2 kilometres.
Ubbysjön is one of Vallentuna's lakes particularly rich in birdlife. Reeds, shrubs and open expanses of water form a diverse mosaic there that benefits birdlife. A blue-marked, 2-kilometre-long hiking trail runs around Ubbysjön.
Trails and Water
On the southeastern side of Angarnssjöängen, north of Örsta, the birdwatching tower and Midsommarberget are the best viewpoints. The Roslagsleden trail passes through the southeastern part of Angarnssjöängen near Örsta. The Angarnssjöängen area also contains the accessible 6.7-kilometre Sjöängsslingan hiking trail.
At the end of May, the annual Musik vid kvarnen event with dancing and music takes place at Väsby kvarn. Kvarnbadet has a heated 50-metre pool, a 17.5-metre pool for swimming lessons and children who are less confident swimmers, as well as a paddling pool for the youngest children. Canoes can be rented at Kvarnbadet; a life jacket is included in the rental price.
Getting Around
Vallentuna has a public transport network with buses and trains. Local destinations include Vallentuna and Brottby. The Roslagsbanan railway runs through Vallentuna and is part of the regional rail network.
