When choosing a Baltic Sea destination, Hanko stands out for its distinctive coastal scenery: the town has 30 km of fine sandy beaches. The remaining 130 km of coastline consists of rocky coves. Together, sandy beaches and rocky shores shape the character of the place. If you want to plan your trip primarily around the type of coastal landscape, Hanko offers both— not as interchangeable stretches, but as clearly distinct sides of the coast.

Experience nature and watch birds

The Uddskatan nature reserve was established in 1990. It is part of the Tulliniemi bird protection area, which in turn belongs to Finland’s Natura 2000 network. The Tulliniemi Nature Trail is another way to explore the nature of the headland: the 6.7 km route is accessible only on foot; cars and bicycles are not allowed. The trail offers opportunities for birdwatching and research. Take its length into account when planning your day, and explore this route on foot.

Another nature trail near Tvärminne passes through a landscape shaped by dunes and dry meadows. Several rare or endangered plant and animal species are found along the route; many are protected under the Nature Conservation Act. The trail is therefore especially appealing to travelers who want to experience the coast through the lens of habitats and biodiversity. Its landscape features differ from the beaches and rocky coves that define Hanko’s coastline.

The Hanko Bird Observatory, also known as Halias, offers guided birdwatching excursions, introductory tours and group visits in spring and autumn. The observatory also conducts bird research and monitoring. If birdwatching is an important part of your trip, you can consider these seasonal activities and the research work as a focus in their own right, alongside the nature trails.

On foot, by bicycle and with views over the Baltic Sea

Thanks to the short distances, Hanko is easy to explore by bicycle or on foot. The town also has a signposted 19 km bicycle route. Blue and white stickers on lamp posts mark its course. This gives you two specific points of reference for planning your ride: the stated length of the route and the markers you can follow along the way.

Hanko’s water tower stands 65 m above sea level and offers panoramic views of the Hanko headland and the Baltic Sea. Visits outside the stated hours can be arranged through the tourist office with a guided tour. The tower combines a viewpoint with expansive views of the coastal landscape. Visits outside the stated hours are arranged through the tourist office and include a guided tour.

Hanko is also accessible by car: the route leads along Highway 25. This means that you can get around using the signposted bicycle route, the short distances for walking, or a named road connection. You can choose how to get around based on the experiences you have planned—for example, a bicycle ride, a visit to the nature trail or a walk.

Architecture and local history

The Hanko architecture walk shares stories about buildings designed by, among others, Lars Sonck, Theodor Höjer, Jac Ahrenberg, Valdemar Aspelin and Armas Lindgren. These names represent different architects whose designs are featured on the walk. If you are interested in architectural history, you can explore this perspective alongside the town’s natural and coastal experiences.

The Hanko Museum has presented, researched and preserved Hanko’s history since 1909. Another historic route is the 1.5 km Love Path on Puistovuoret. It was created in the late 19th century for the wellbeing of spa guests. The museum, architecture walk and Love Path offer different ways to explore the town’s history: through museum work, building designs and a historic walking route.

If you want to expand your choice of destinations beyond Hanko, the directory also features Nurmijärvi, Lapinjärvi, Sipoo, Lohja, Tuusula, Siuntio and Sammatti.
