Kurkimäki: Forest and Trails in Helsinki

Kurkimäki is an urban district in Uusimaa with nearby forest, a sports park and traces of historic fortifications. The local facts do not document a beach or direct access to the Baltic Sea. Its location within the wider Helsinki region should not be confused with a documented coastal location for this particular residential area.

Nearby Forest and Fortifications

Kurkimäenpuisto is the largest forest area in Kurkimäki. On a hilly ridge, pine trees and dry, partly rocky terrain characterize the immediate surroundings. Mäntykukanmetsä lies at the western corner of the district and is also a continuous area of nearby rocky forest. Fortifications are described in both areas. The larger Mustikkamäki defence complex extends across Kontula, Kurkimäki, Myllypuro and Vesala. A position in the northwestern part was built during the First World War, between 1915 and 1918. This historical information does not mean that all positions are freely accessible, signposted or safe to visit. Follow local paths and conservation rules when walking.

Sports Park and Getting There

Kurkimäen liikuntapuisto can be reached by car, with parking available, and by public transport. It is said to be about a 15-minute walk from Kontula metro station; this is a general indication, not a guarantee of the route for an individual or of current service. The sports park has basketball courts, four tennis courts and outdoor fitness areas. An ice rink is listed for winter. Whether it is actually open or usable on a particular date depends on current operating and weather conditions. In particular, ice conditions should never be inferred simply from the mention of a winter facility.
