Rajamäki offers several distinct highlights to help you decide what to see on your trip: industrial and architectural history, insights into farm life, and a starting point for the Kiljavannummi outdoor trail network. Consider whether you are more interested in the history of the place, local working and living environments, or outdoor trails. Each of these themes can give your stay a different focus.

Industrial History and Architecture

The Rajamäen Ryyppi factory and alcohol museum focuses on Finnish work, industry and the history of spirits. One notable exhibit is a Barbet distillation apparatus made by Metallwerke J. Aders of Magdeburg. It was installed in 1913 and is located in the museum’s narrow, tall distillery. This offers a chance to explore Rajamäki’s industrial history through a specific piece of equipment, while the museum also looks at the broader context of work and alcohol production in Finland.

The museum’s physical layout is important to keep in mind when planning your visit: it is not accessible. The exhibition rooms are spread across four floors, reached by spiral staircases. If you need to take this limitation into account when choosing activities, you can also explore Rajamäki through its architecture, flak towers or trail network.

Modern architecture includes the factory and residential buildings designed by Erkki Huttunen in the 1930s, as well as the factory community’s church. They are part of a selection of significant Finnish modern architecture recognized by the international DOCOMOMO network. Rajamäen Church was built in 1938 by Alkoholiliike Oy for its employees. Huttunen also designed this functionalist, neoclassical church building. Its bell tower is considered a landmark of Rajamäki and stands 48.11 metres tall.

More Insights and Outdoor Trails

The two flak towers on Tykkitorninmäki offer a different perspective on local history. Together, they form a landmark unique in the world. Oy Alkoholiliike Ab had the towers built in peacetime in 1940–1941 to protect the liquor factory and village from air raids. The towers can be viewed from the outside. This makes the visit different from exploring the museum’s exhibition rooms: at the flak towers, the focus is on viewing an exterior structure.

Rajamäen Hiiva offers insight into another chapter in the area’s history: the old yeast factory is now home to a community of craftspeople, artists and small businesses, with shops and workshops. Farm life takes centre stage at Toikan Tila. Visitors can learn about life on a farm and its animals, and enjoy treats. The farm also sells colostrum, meat, potatoes and peas.

If you would like to include time outdoors in your travel plans, you can use the Kiljavannummi trail network as a guide. Rajamäen Uimahalli swimming pool is a starting point for this outdoor trail network. This allows culture enthusiasts and active travellers to choose different focuses without committing to a particular circular route.

Rajamäki as a Starting Point

Rajamäki has public transport connections to Helsinki and Hyvinkää and is well connected by transport links. If you are looking for accommodation, you can take these connections into account when choosing where to stay, while also deciding which local themes matter most to you: Finnish industrial and architectural history, insights into crafts and farm life, or the outdoor trail network.
