Between the Sea, River and Beach

Bureå is located near the sea and the Bureälven River. This gives the area a maritime landscape combined with a river setting that can be followed all the way to the coast: the Bureälven flows into the sea at Bureå. This combination is particularly appealing when choosing a suitable holiday destination if you would like to combine days by the water with cultural history and shorter excursions.

About 1 kilometre east of Bureå lies Danielsten havsbad. It has a shallow beach with fine-grained sand, as well as a volleyball court, changing rooms, toilets and a playground. The combination of beach and facilities makes it a destination in its own right during a stay in Bureå. The final approximately 3-kilometre section of the Bureälven consists of running-water stretches and offers fishing opportunities for trout, grayling, pike and perch.

Buildings and Local History

Architecture is a notable aspect of Bureå. Bureå kyrka was built in 1917–20 and designed by Fredrik Falkenberg. It is considered one of the outstanding examples of Swedish National Romantic architecture. Anyone who wants to get to know the area through more than just its landscape and water will find a direct connection to its architectural history here.

Bureå Hembygdspark is also part of the area’s cultural history. The park is located east of Församlingsgården in the centre of Bureå and was inaugurated in 1933. It contains a smithy. Another historic building is the Åbacka Pavilion, a building constructed in 1897 in the Bureå parish. The Åbacka Pavilion is older than Bureå kyrka. On Klosterholmen, the outlines of houses and the remains of a cellar have been preserved; parts of the buildings have been excavated.

Bure Arkiv provides an insight into the region’s working-life and industrial history. The working-life museum in Bureå covers the local sawmill and pulp industries in its permanent exhibition. The archive is accessible for research purposes by appointment. During its summer opening hours, Bure Arkiv holds a lecture at 1 p.m. on Sundays; the topics usually concern the history of Bureå.

Waterways, Leisure and Special Collections

A footpath and cycle path along the Bureälven leads to Klosterholmen. Families and LEGO enthusiasts will find another unusual attraction in Bureå: Bureå Camping is home to Sweden’s largest permanent LEGO exhibition. In addition to the LEGO Museum, there is also a LEGO building tent where visitors can create their own works.

The various destinations each offer something different. Danielsten havsbad is known for its shallow sandy beach and practical waterside facilities, while the Bureälven, with its running-water stretches and fishing opportunities, offers a different way to experience the landscape.
