Lövånger: Church Village, Nature and Cycling Trails

The historic church village and nearby natural areas define Lövånger; at its heart is one of Sweden’s oldest preserved church villages, dating back to the 17th century. This cultural and historical focus is complemented by the Gärdefjärden Nature Reserve, several cycling trails and the nearby Bjuröklubb Nature Reserve. Lövånger is therefore particularly interesting when choosing accommodation if you would like to combine historic sites and nature experiences on the same trip.

Lövånger Church Village and Church

Lövånger Church Village comprises a total of 117 church cottages as well as numerous stable buildings. The church cottages date back to the mid-17th century and give the village its distinctive historical character.

Lövånger Church complements this ensemble with an older architectural history. Construction began in the 15th century, and it was probably put into use in 1507. The church is built mostly of natural grey stone; the surrounds and vaults contain brick. Anyone interested in medieval ecclesiastical architecture and the development of historic settlements will find a specific point of interest here rather than merely a general description of the area’s history.

Museum in a Västerbottensgård

Immediately north of the old stone church, Lövångers Hembygdsförening runs a museum in a Västerbottensgård. The exhibition features a 1913 Adler automobile and also focuses on blacksmiths from the surrounding area. The upper floor covers watchmaking, shoemaking, tanning, photography and dairy farming. The exhibits also include a historic classroom. The museum is therefore well suited to a visit that brings together not just one building, but various aspects of regional work and everyday life in the past.

Gärdefjärden: Trails, Lake and Birdwatching

The Gärdefjärden Nature Reserve offers walking trails, picnic areas, a birdwatching tower and several viewpoints. The bird-rich lake is surrounded by a valuable cultural landscape and is an important resting place for birds during the spring and autumn migrations. Birdwatching facilities include a birdwatching tower, a birdwatching hide and a platform; all three provide views across the lake.

The nature reserve can be accessed via Lövånger Church Village and Soldattorpet. Lövånger bus station is located in the immediate vicinity of the nature reserve.

Cycling and Other Trails

Lövånger has six cycling trails of varying lengths. The Bölerundan route is also known as Bruna spåret. It is 18 km long and offers several picnic areas. For walking, there is also a trail that starts at Lövångers hembygdsgård. The nearby Bjuröklubb Nature Reserve is shaped by both its landscape and history. It has three marked walking trails, including a 6.2 km circular route, as well as a lighthouse and winding paths with sea views.

Orientation and Local Character

Lövånger is located directly on the E4. In addition to the historic attractions and natural areas, Lövånger Saluhall is one of the local points of interest: there you can buy locally produced food and small-scale craft products.
