Malå is located inland in Västerbottens län and encompasses Lapland’s natural forests, extensive marshlands and the waters of the Malån. Malåbygden is nestled between vast forests and beautiful waters; there are 17 nature reserves in the municipality of Malå.

Nature and Water

The Malå-Storforsen nature reserve encompasses the Storforsen gorge as well as sections of rapids above and below it. An old loggers’ cabin stands on the north bank. The marked Koppsele hiking trail passes through a nature reserve and is about 2 kilometres long. The Malåbygden region offers numerous opportunities for recreation and outdoor activities in the form of hiking trails.

There are seven fishing areas in the municipality of Malå. The “Malåkortet” fishing permit provides access to five fishing areas. Local fishing guides can be booked in Malå, for example by beginners or anglers who wish to gain additional knowledge about the waters. Svedjan has a small beach and a jetty that makes it easier to access the water for swimming. In Svedjan, it is possible to rent a boat to explore the lake. Släppträsk bathing area has a long sandy beach and shallow water.

Winter and Summer

Tjamstanbackarna has four ski lifts and ten runs. The cross-country ski trails at Tjamstanvallen range from options for beginners to courses for competitive skiers and offer tracks for both classic skiing and skating. The winter trail network in the municipality of Malå is created and maintained entirely on a voluntary basis by Malå skoterklubb together with the villages.

In summer, Tjamstanberget is suitable for mountain biking and downhill cycling. Tjamstanberget is also suitable for hiking and trail running in summer. Cykelled Broarna runt is an approximately 30-kilometre cycling loop along the Malån River. The cycle path between Almbo and Brännäs is about 13 kilometres long and passes through forests and natural surroundings. The different trail lengths help you compare routes by activity and distance.

Culture and History

Koppsele is one of the oldest Sámi settlements in Malå. A Sámi settlement in Koppsele is already mentioned on maps from 1671. Koppsele can be reached on foot or by boat.

The grounds of Malå hembygdsgård contain a total of 13 buildings, most of which date from the second half of the 19th century. Malå hembygdsgård includes a local heritage museum, an exhibit on the history of Kniv-Eli, a museum about the 1960s and a traditional bakery hut. Máláge Sámienseäbrrie / Malå sameförening works to preserve, promote and develop the Sámi cultural heritage in Malå through various activities, meeting places and cultural events for members and visitors.
