Sollefteå: River Landscapes, Culture and Sport

The Nip landscape of Sollefteå was formed after the melting of the inland ice through repeated changes in the courses of the Ångermanälven and Faxälven rivers; steep sandy slopes and the plain between them were formed in the process.

Landscape and Water

The Nipleden hiking trail begins at Sollefteå Camping on Risön in the centre of Sollefteå. It follows the Ångermanälven upstream to Edsbron and, after crossing the river, returns downstream to the starting point.

A digital navigation map with downloadable GPS files for GPS devices or mobile phones is available for travelling along the Ångermanälven. In Sollefteå Municipality, fishing opportunities are available in lakes and flowing waters for beginners and experienced anglers.

Hågestaön is a green area close to the town in Sollefteå. In the surrounding area, Gideåbergsmyrarna is a botanically significant moorland and swamp forest area with numerous orchid species, which are attributed to calcareous moraine soil. In the surrounding area, footbridges and paths lead to Rävlarna, where there is an observation tower.

History and Culture

For several centuries, Sollefteå was a central location as well as a market and transshipment centre for goods transported along the river. From the 1870s onwards, Sollefteå developed into a town with representative buildings, most of which were constructed in wooden architecture.

Sollefteå Church has origins dating back to the 13th century. It is open on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and in connection with church services.

Apotekshuset is an art gallery and cultural arena in the town of Sollefteå. For more than 50 years, Hullsta Gård has been a meeting place for culture in Sollefteå and offers a wide and varied cultural programme.

Tingshuset, designed by Folke Zetterwall, is characterised by the National Romanticism of the period around the turn of the previous century and also displays distinctive Norwegian and Scottish influences. Kulturstråket in central Sollefteå combines history and art with a stroll through an attractive park landscape.

In Näsåker, Nämforsen preserves at least 2,595 rock carvings, the oldest of which are presumably around 6,000 years old. Nearby, the Nämforsen rock-carving area is open to visitors all year round; the carvings are only not visible when covered by snow. In summer, the Rock Carving Museum offers guided tours with free admission.

Sport and Exercise

Hallstaberget has cross-country ski trails, roller-ski tracks, mountain bike trails, a biathlon stadium, alpine ski runs and ski jumps. There are also around 60 kilometres of prepared ski trails. A downhill track and a skills area complement the facilities; the lift is open in summer.

Sollefteå Aquarena is a swimming facility in the centre of Sollefteå and also has a well-equipped gym. Risöbadet is a heated swimming facility in the middle of Sollefteå, next to Sollefteå Camping.

Risöbadet has three pools: a 50 × 21 metre pool with a depth of 1.2 to 1.9 metres and eight lanes, a 16 × 8 metre pool with a depth of 0.6 to 0.9 metres, and a paddling pool with a depth of 0.15 to 0.35 metres. Risöbadet also has a water slide, a playground, a beach volleyball court, a kiosk, food and beverage services, and changing rooms with showers.

Sollefteå’s minigolf course is located directly next to Sollefteå Camping and Risöbadet. There is a parkour park in Västraskogen in Sollefteå.
