Those who choose Björboholm for a trip featuring water activities, cycling and local history will find various points of interest for planning their days. The old part of Björboholm is situated partly on a beautiful peninsula. At the same time, Lake Mjörn, preserved traces of the former Västgötabanan railway and paths through the surrounding area shape the possible interests of visitors.

Local history along the former railway embankment

Several traces of the former Västgötabanan railway have been preserved in Björboholm. These include the station house, the railway keeper’s house and the railway embankment with its rock cuttings. The opening of the Västgötabanan in 1900 helped Björboholm develop into a central locality. For visitors who want to get to know a place through its history, this creates a clear focus: it is not only individual buildings but also the route of the former railway that shapes the perception of the area.

Björboholm, with its summer villas along the Västgötabanan, is also one of the municipal conservation areas around Lake Mjörn. The former common woodland is now highly valued for recreation and outdoor life.

Björboholmsparken and Lake Mjörn

Björboholmsparken is located in the centre of Björboholm, along the former railway embankment. The pavilion contains a book-sharing shelf open to everyone: books can be borrowed, left, exchanged and read there. Directly behind Björboholmsparken, the football pitch offers a view of Lake Mjörn. These locations provide practical points of reference for visitors who want to combine local life, a short reading break and views of the water during their stay.

Lake Mjörn is considered one of the region’s most fish-rich lakes, both in terms of species diversity and the quantity of fish. From the boat harbour in Björboholm, you can take your own boat around the islands of Lake Mjörn. Mjörns båtuthyrning in Björboholm offers boat hire. Those interested in the water can therefore choose between views of the lake, a boat trip in their own boat and boat hire as different travel ideas.

Promenades and cycling routes

The Strandkulle promenades are a path around Björbo Huvde, also known as Strandkullen. It was restored from 2011 to 2013, and its steamboat pier was also rebuilt. The history of the promenade includes a bathing jetty, small changing huts and a steamboat pier, which the route passed. For travel planning, this provides another connection to the area, linking water, former uses and walking paths without associating the promenade with any particular length of stay.

Cyclists will also find several specific points of interest. The area immediately south of Björboholm is near Sverigeleden, a nationwide cycling route. The Mjörn Runt cycle route offers views of Lake Mjörn and then follows the water directly for a longer stretch. The Mjörn Runt circular route is 67 kilometres long and includes approximately 700 metres of elevation gain. It also follows the former railway embankment towards Björboholm and Sjövik. When planning your trip, you can choose between short visits to local sights and a longer cycling tour.

If you would like to look at other destinations from the same selection in addition to Björboholm, you can find Tollered, Floda, Stenkullen, Öjersjö, Jonsered, Sjövik, Lerum and Gråbo here.
