Dals-Ed between Tresticklan, lakes and history

In northwestern Dalsland, near the Norwegian border, Tresticklan National Park is located in the municipality of Dals-Ed. Tresticklan National Park is the largest roadless and undeveloped forest area in southern Sweden. The places of Nössemark and Ed are part of Dals-Ed.

Nature

There are three marked trails in the national park: Bodalsvikenleden, Bråtaneslingan and Orshöjdsleden. A historic route through the landscape is the Hallevägen trail between Rävmarken and Bodalsviken, which border guards and refugees used during the Second World War.

The Heråmaden Nature Reserve encompasses untouched forests along the Herå River and covers almost five square kilometres. The municipality of Dals-Ed also has more than 400 lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. In the Furustad Nature Reserve, you can explore land formed by sedimentation and take walks in the forest; the area is easiest to reach by water, or alternatively via a forest track from Valsebo.

Trails

The Härvägen hiking trail begins at Tavlan. From Klevmarken, the hike can be continued via Ringsmon on trails connected to trails in the Heråmaden Nature Reserve and Tresticklan National Park. From Tresticklan, the Lundsnes Nature Reserve on the Norwegian side of the border can also be reached.

Motionsgården Tavlan is an outdoor recreation area with several paths and routes that allow you to create your own scenic hiking routes. The orange hiking trail runs 3.9 kilometres around Sågtjärn and follows forest paths. The red hiking trail is 24.5 kilometres long, goes around the built-up area and passes north of Tavlan; it follows paths and forest roads and is hilly.

When there is sufficient snow, groomed cross-country ski tracks with lengths of 2.6, 4.3 and 22 kilometres are prepared at Tavlan.

History

From January to May 1945, Rävlyckan was one of 14 secret Norwegian military bases on Swedish territory. Parsetjärns skans is a fortification dating from the context of the Second World War. The northern section comprises 13 trenches and a so-called „kg-hatt“.

Parsetjärns skans can be reached via Route 166 southwest of Ed; there is a rest area next to the site. Gäserudsstugan is a local heritage museum and one of the oldest surviving buildings in Dalsland. The site includes a stable and a rare so-called Stolpbod building; all the buildings are very well preserved inside and out.

Culture

The Eds MC- och Motormuseum displays 700 objects, including historic motorcycles, radios, sewing machines and boat engines. The collection includes 160 motorcycles manufactured in Europe and the United States.

The Dals-Ed municipal art gallery opened in the library in 2017. It offers a changing, wide-ranging exhibition programme featuring professional artists and amateurs. At the market in Ed, there are stalls selling goods, food and coffee, as well as pony rides for children.

At the market square in Ed, Café Smör & Socker serves homemade fika and open sandwiches.

Water

Dalslands Moose Ranch has a ten-hectare enclosure with seven tame moose. One- or two-hour guided tours of the moose park are offered there.

Canodal offers canoe and kayak rental with the necessary equipment in the Dalsland-Nordmarken lake system, and also provides instruction in paddling technique and safe conduct on the lake. The municipal fishing permit for Dals-Ed covers 15 fish-management areas and makes a fishing trip possible.

The Sund–Jaren ferry service across Lake Stora Le is 900 metres long and takes ten minutes. The Dals-Ed Tourist Information Office provides information and brochures about activities in the municipality of Dals-Ed and in Dalsland.

The Dals-Eds DiscGolfPark is a 9-hole course at Sågtjärn bathing area in Dals-Ed.
