Discover Östra Frölunda
Accommodation in Östra Frölunda
Östra Frölunda combines historic sites with long hiking trails, waterside experiences and landscapes around the Ätran. Those wishing to combine a cultural trip with active days will find several different points of interest here: churches and fortifications, a former mine, a lake with a public bathing area, and signposted trails through the region.
Churches, the Ätran and historical traces
The present-day church in Östra Frölunda was built in 1826 by the master builder Per Eriksson from Sandhult. It stands high above the western bank of the Ätran. The ceiling painting in the chancel was created during a renovation in the 1930s by Einar Forseth. The church is also the starting point for the Kindaholmsturen trail.
Another historic site is Kinnahus. The fortification was built to monitor the historic route along the Ätran Valley, known as the “ridhväg”. Three defensive ditches remain at the visible fortification. Visitors are asked to park in the designated area. Kinnahus is also the endpoint of the 50-kilometre Kurirleden hiking trail, which begins at Örestens fästning fortress near Örby.
Hiking with different route options
For longer days of hiking, the 49-kilometre Pilgrimsleden Kindaholm pilgrimage trail is a good option. It connects the churches of Kalv, Håcksvik, Östra Frölunda and Mårdaklev. The equally long, 50-kilometre Kurirleden leads from Örby to Kinnahus in Östra Frölunda. When planning this route, bear in mind that some sections are poorly maintained and inadequately signposted. The information about length and route helps you choose between the two trails based on the type of route you prefer.
The Holsljungaturen trail is also part of the local orientation: it crosses the Ätran as it leads into Östra Frölunda. Canoe routes on the Ätran are offered southwards from Östra Frölunda and Håcksvik; their routes are checked regularly.
Lake, bathing area and former mining
Vitasjön has a public bathing area with jetties, a sandy beach and grassy areas. The lake is signposted along the road between Mårdaklev and Östra Frölunda. This makes it possible to include time by the water in your travel plans without losing sight of the area's historic destinations.
At Skillnabo Gruva in Östra Frölunda, feldspar and quartz were mined at the beginning of the 20th century. In addition to the mine's water-filled area, there is a raft, a picnic table, a mine cart and a barbecue area. At the 19th-century Lerbäcksbyn farm, you can also experience the history of the Sjuhärad merchant farms.
