Lighthouse on the Teniroka Dunes

A second focal point is the “Užavas bāka” lighthouse. It is listed among Latvia’s state-protected cultural monuments and stands on one of the three high, forested dunes known as the Teniroka Dunes. This dune reaches a height of 28 metres. The location therefore combines a historic structure with a clearly defined landscape feature. The lighthouse’s first tower was completed in 1879. The religious buildings also give Užava a distinctive profile. The present stone church, “Užavas luterāņu baznīca”, was built in 1783. At the same time, it is considered the only Lutheran church in Latvia without a tower. This combination of great age and unusual architectural distinction makes it an independent cultural and historical subject in its own right, without requiring it to form a shared complex with the lighthouse.

The Baptist congregation of Užava is also part of the area’s religious history. It is the oldest Baptist congregation in Latvia.
