In the old town of Allenstein (Olsztyn), brick Gothic sights include the Warmian Chapter Castle, St James Cathedral, the Old Town Hall and the Upper Gate, as well as remains of the former fortification walls. The Warmian Chapter Castle was a residence of the Warmian canons; Nicolaus Copernicus lived there from 1516 to 1521 and carried out astronomical observations. The medieval layout of the old town has largely been preserved, and many buildings retain medieval foundations as well as later sgraffito decorations.
