Avdebo – Dike Landscape, Cycle Path and Lammefjord History

Avdebo draws attention to a very flat landscape and the traces of the drainage of the Lammefjord. Avdebo Plantation stands out particularly clearly in this landscape. The private plantation covers approximately 200 hectares and was established during the Second World War at the southeastern end of the drained Lammefjord. At this point, the plantation connects the very flat landscape with the drainage history of the Lammefjord. This creates a tangible connection between landscape formation, rural character and cultural history that remains visible in Avdebo.

Dike Landscape and Cycling

A prominent structure is the Avdebodæmningen dike. It is 2.4 km long; in 2012, a cycle path was built along the top of the dike. The cycle path on the dike crest forms the specific cycling section within the Lammefjord dike system; the 2.4 km provide a clearly defined route framework. For visitors interested in cycling, the dike crest therefore remains a clearly defined part of the local orientation. The Lammefjord dike system, including the pumping station at Audebo, is designated as a cultural environment. It comprises the grass- and stone-covered dike, the pumping station buildings, as well as the canals and their outlets into the fjord. The canals flow into the fjord; the designated area therefore extends from the dike crest to the waterways.

The designation applies to the entire geographical area of Odsherred and not solely to the individual Lammefjord dike system. The memorial stone stands on the Avdebodæmningen dike and refers to the history of the drainage project at this structure.

Audebo Pumping Station

The Audebo Pumping Station dates from 1874. Today, it is also a visitor centre and an educational venue for the history of the Lammefjord. Groups can access the Audebo Pumping Station by prior arrangement with the facility manager. For groups, prior arrangement therefore remains a requirement for access to the pumping station.
