Kisserup: Village Structure, Church and Routes

Kisserup has an exceptionally well-preserved village structure and development. The village also has a curving street layout. Well-preserved star-shaped field divisions complete the picture. For a walk, the course of the streets can be used as a practical guide through the village. When exploring on foot, the street layout, buildings, and field divisions can be viewed one after another.

Church and Churchyard

The wooden figures “Søstrene på Kisserup kirkegård” by Alison Michell stand in the churchyard of Kisserup. Kisserup Church was originally built as a Romanesque village church. Its nave has a Romanesque central section as well as Gothic extensions to the west and east. The furnishings include a Romanesque granite baptismal font. The tower of Kisserup Church was built around the year 1500. The Romanesque and Gothic components belong to different parts of the nave: the central section is Romanesque, while the western and eastern extensions are Gothic.

Memorial Stone and Shelter Site

The memorial stone Genforeningssten i Kisserup stands on a small grassy area in front of an oak tree at the point where Hjortemarksvej meets Skullerupvej. The stone is therefore located at a specific intersection in the village. At Kisserup Shelterplads, the shelter is designed like a ship’s bow and inspired by Viking ships.

Routes to the Church and Cemetery

Route 4.1 from Kr. Hvalsø via Aggerup, Kisserup, and Krathuse is 6 km long. It leads uphill to Kisserup Church and to the grave of the high-court attorney Carl Madsen in the cemetery of Kisserup Church. The 6 km provide a clear framework for planning a route. The climb to the church should be considered as part of the route. The grave in the cemetery can be planned as a separate destination within the same route.

The Ice Age Route, cycle route 44, runs approximately 1.5 km from Kisserup Shelterplads. On a cycling tour, the approximate distance from the shelter site can be taken into account when planning. The figure remains an estimate and does not describe an exact distance. For cyclists, it therefore provides a rough spatial orientation without specifying the distance precisely.

Hilltop View and Nature Site

The hill near Kisserup Church offers a wide view across the protected areas. “Søen,” located in Kisserup’s former communal peat cutting, is considered a good local nature site. For an exploration, the hill and the former peat cutting can be noted as separate landscape points.

Arrival in the Village

There is a bus stop in Kisserup. The car park at Kisserup Church can be used with consideration for church services and activities. For arrival, the bus stop and car park can be treated as separate points. These two points should therefore be planned separately for arrival in the village and at the church.
