Glumsø: Lake, Nature and Danish Two-Wheeled Culture
If you would like to combine water, nature and cultural discoveries when choosing your destination, Glumsø offers several clearly distinct points of interest. At the centre is Glumsø Sø: In 2017, the lake received a six-metre-long freshwater beach. In addition, there are paths along the shore, the Hjertestien trail, Glumsø Skov, a distinctive church and a museum that showcases the world of Danish two-wheeled vehicles.
Glumsø Sø and Paths by the Water
Along the paths by Glumsø Sø, you can experience the lake, the surrounding nature and the birdlife. At the beach, there is a bathing jetty from which visitors can jump into the water. The Hjertestien circular trail around Lake Glumsø is approximately 3.8 kilometres long and easy to walk. It can be used for most of the year by cyclists, wheelchair users and users of electric scooters. This documents both a circular walk and various forms of travel along the lake.
Forest, Open Landscapes and Natural Area
Glumsø Skov and the associated natural area were established in 2004–2005. The forest consists mainly of deciduous trees with scattered conifers. Open landscapes with nutrient-poor grassland, meadows, a lake and marshland surround the wooded areas. The surroundings therefore present different types of landscape within a compact thematic area: forest, open spaces and water-dominated nature.
Church, Stone Grave and Two-Wheeled History
Glumsø Kirke is a longhouse church with a Romanesque central section and is a wayside church. The stone dolmen can be reached from Glumsø via the old church path in a westerly direction; from there, there is an unobstructed view of the stone grave. The Dansk Cykel & Knallert Museum provides a different cultural focus. It has a unique collection of vehicles from the world of Danish two-wheeled vehicles, including many specialised bicycles and very rare mopeds. The exhibitions cover an excerpt from the history of bicycles and its consequences. In recent years, particular emphasis has been placed on sports and racing bicycles, as well as on the environment and health benefits of cycling. There are also normally numerous unusual bicycles and vehicles there that older and younger children can try out.
Arrival by Regional Train
Regional trains on the railway line between Nykøbing Falster and Copenhagen stop at Glumsø station. From there, you can continue towards Ringsted or to Næstved station, the next stations on the line. This rail connection is another specific point of reference when comparing Glumsø as a destination for your trip.
