Hørve: Cloverleaf Trails, Village History and Rail Connection

Between Coastline, Canal and Old Village

Hørve is particularly picturesque where nature observation and history come together on a walk. A Cloverleaf Trail walk follows the old coastline towards Lammefjord. The land canal surrounding the entire drained Lammefjord creates an attractive setting with good opportunities to experience nature.

Along one Cloverleaf Trail route, grey herons often stand among the reeds on the opposite bank, while coots swim there. Those who pay close attention to the landscape along the way can therefore also experience the route as an opportunity to observe birds and waterside areas.

Another Cloverleaf Trail walk leads through hilly terrain with numerous ancient burial mounds. The landscape is therefore shaped not only by open natural scenery, but also by visible traces of a long local history.

A Cloverleaf Trail walk also leads through the part of Hørve that developed rapidly after the construction of the Odsherredsbanen railway, which connected Vejleby with Hørve. In old Hørve, the church and village pond were located in the historic village centre. As you walk, you can therefore take in different facets of the town side by side: coastline, waterside landscape, historic traces in the terrain and the organically developed village.

Station and Transport History

Hørve has a station on the Odsherredsbanen railway. From there, you can continue by train to, among other places, Asnæs, Fårevejle, Holbæk and Nykøbing Sj. To visit the Odsherreds Trafikmuseum, you can take Lokaltog on line 510R of the Odsherredsbanen to Hørve. The railway connection is therefore relevant both to getting around today and to the history of the town.

The Odsherreds Trafikmuseum is located in the former warehouse at Hørve station. The museum displays ship models from the collection of Aksel Valentin Petersen, including the DSB ferry Strib from 1901 to 1935 and the ferry Marie. The museum site and the models focus on transport and shipping, without requiring a major thematic detour from the station.

Church and Historical Details

Hørve Church dates from around the year 1100. The church contains well-preserved post-Reformation frescoes from 1564 in the medieval style. The altarpiece from 1630 bears the monogram of Christian IV. The combination of the building’s age, the frescoes and the altarpiece makes the church particularly interesting for visitors who want to discover historical details not only in the townscape, but also inside a building.

The Korskirken in Vallekilde also offers an independent perspective on the region’s architectural history. It was built in 1882 by local craftsmen and students of Vallekilde Højskole, following a design by master builder Andreas Bentsen. Vallekilde Højskole also offers prospective students a visit with a guided tour of the school and an introduction to the teaching staff.
