Strandhuse on the Isefjord: Sandy Beaches, Forests and Routes

Coast on the Isefjord

At the Isefjord, Strandhuse immediately showcases its maritime character: there is a bathing spot with a sandy beach near Strandhuse. The Isefjord forms Strandhuse’s eastern boundary, and there is public access to the Isefjord from Strandhuse. When planning visits to the coast and forests, you can use the Isefjord as well as Annebjerg Skov and Ulkerup Skov as specific reference points.

The shape of the coastline is also useful for orientation. The coast between Strandhuse and Sidinge Fjord is exposed towards the Isefjord. Thus, on the waterside of the village, a sandy beach, public access and a coastal location facing the fjord come together.

Forests and paths

Strandhuse lies between Annebjerg Skov and Ulkerup Skov. In Ulkerup Skov, there is a 4.5-kilometre yellow-marked hiking trail that passes many of the forest’s sights. Hiking Route 122 is 11.3 kilometres long and runs through Annebjerg Skov, Ulkerup Overdrev and Ulkerup Skov. The shorter forest hike remains in Ulkerup Skov, while the longer route passes through three landscape areas. The different route lengths can help with tour planning.

There are designated bridleways in these landscape areas: in Ulkerup Skov, on Ulkerup Overdrev and in Annebjerg Skov. The situation is different for mountain biking: there are no marked mountain-bike routes in Annebjerg Skov or Ulkerup Skov. Through Annebjerg Skov, it is possible to travel on foot and by bicycle as far as Nykøbing. The forest areas therefore accommodate various types of activity, without hiking, riding and mountain-bike trails being treated as equivalent.

Cycling and fjord routes

Cycling Route 40, Fjordstien, passes through Strandhuse. The Fjordsti hiking route begins in Strandhuse and is 152.6 kilometres long. Cycling Route 40 is a cycling route, while the Fjordsti hiking route is a hiking route. A tour along the western shore of the Isefjord, 60 kilometres long in total, passes Ulkerup Skov and Annebjerg Skov and can be divided into three daily stages. Planning therefore depends on whether you are considering a cycling route, a hiking route or a tour that can be split over several days. The three daily stages refer to this western-shore tour, not to the shorter forest hikes.

Village character and history

Strandhuse is a village of fishermen’s and farmers’ houses and originally developed as a small fishing village.

Ulkerup Landsby was established around 1300 and lies in the middle of Ulkerup Skov. On the protected site of the former village, in the middle of Ulkerup Skov, there are seven ceramic figures known as the „Ulkerup souls“. The shrouded figures illustrate the mythical story of the people whom Christian VII forcibly relocated from their forest village in 1782. The former village site lies in the middle of Ulkerup Skov, which is also crossed by hiking and bridleways.

Getting there by bus

Strandhuse is served by bus route 566 from Nykøbing Sj.; the bus runs once an hour.
