Alsted Between Forest Trails and Church History

If you would like to explore nature trails alongside older architectural and historical traces during your trip, Alsted offers two clear points of interest: the Alsted Skov woodland with its marked trails, as well as churches and cultural-historical monuments in the village and its surroundings. This allows you to plan your days around observing the landscape, covering longer sections of trail, and taking a closer look at architectural and written historical evidence.

Forest Trails Through Alsted Skov

The approximately 8-kilometre marked “Sporet i Alsted Skov” is located west of the village of Alsted. The trail through Alsted Skov runs southeast of Sorø through hilly moraine terrain, dense beech forest, and quiet clearings.

A Connection of Four Nature Trails

A broader orientation is provided by the connecting route “4 Trails South of Sorø”. It links four nature trails, including Alsted Skov, and runs from Lynge-Frederiksberg farther east to Alsted Skov. For route planning, it is important to note that this connecting route is not marked as a single trail. It follows the markings of four individual trails; in between are connecting sections on public roads and paths. This makes it different in structure from a single marked trail.

Church Architecture and Fresco Painting

Alsted Church combines a Romanesque chancel with an apse and nave with Gothic additions, including a tower, porch, and chapel. The original sections of the apse fresco were created between 1150 and 1175 by the Jørlunde workshop. For those interested in culture, the appeal lies in the combination of different construction phases and the fresco painting, which can be dated. If you would like to examine the architecture more closely, pay attention to the building structures, additions, and paintings; for a nature-focused part of the day, the woodland landscape takes centre stage instead. This makes it possible to explore Alsted according to specific interests without blending the individual sites and trails into one uniform experience.

Small Cultural-Historical Traces

Smaller cultural-historical traces also deserve a closer look. At “Rundhøj, mv., Alsted Skov (#2)”, the chamber is rectangular; a nearby stone bears two cup-shaped depressions. The Vildtbanesten standing near Alsted Mill marks the former royal hunting grounds; it is located approximately 50 metres north of the mill and bears the inscription “F5//SA//WB//1762//N 28//” beneath an engraved crown.
