Fjenneslev: Runestone, Church Art and Moraine Landscape

Fertile farmland and scattered stands of deciduous trees alternate with one another. The signposted Fjenneslev Sundhedsspor health trail begins at the green area on Dagmarsvej in Fjenneslev and has fitness equipment along the route. The fitness equipment along the route allows you to exercise while walking. This distinguishes the Sundhedsspor from a mere connecting path, even though hiking trails continue to the church. Hiking trails connect the Fjenneslev Sundhedsspor with Fjenneslev Church. Tuel Ã… and a fish bridge are also associated with this connection. For active days, you can consider these two themes together: a signposted exercise route and a connection to the church. This creates a clear choice between physical activity and a culture-related destination.

Runestone and Church Art

The Sasserbro Runestone stands in the cemetery of Fjenneslev Church, to the left of the church porch. It dates from the Viking Age, more precisely from the late Viking Age, and bears the inscription: "Sasser raised the stone and built the bridge." The twin towers of Fjenneslev Church were built before 1200. Its frescoes date from around 1150 and are among the oldest in Denmark.

The now-invisible ruins of Fjenneslev represent the basement of a stone house that probably belonged to Asser Rig's manor at Fjenneslev. They were investigated by the National Museum in 1891. For your visit, it is therefore important to distinguish between the visible church complex and these no-longer-visible ruins.

The Fjenneslev shelter also adds a landscape feature. It lies at the edge of a small forest and offers a view of Fjenneslev Church. The view of Fjenneslev Church makes the shelter a distinct landmark at the edge of the small forest; the forest forms the immediate backdrop. Fjenneslev Church is open from 1 April to 31 October, Tuesday to Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the church may be closed during these hours for services and other church activities. When planning your day, it is therefore important to remember that services and other church activities may also close the church during its regular opening hours.
