Bakkebølle between the coastal path, beach and Stone Age
Bakkebølle can be discovered through its paths, coastline and traces of history. Between the Storstrømmen, Vintersbølle Skov and Stone Age sites, a varied setting emerges for your stay: you can give different weight to nature experiences, maritime orientation and history.
Exploring Bakkebøllestien
Bakkebøllestien runs along a disused railway line between Bakkebølle and Vordingborg. At the same time, it is a footpath, cycle path and bridleway. Its location on the northeastern side of Vintersbølle Skov makes the path a clear point of reference for anyone wishing to explore Bakkebølle on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. Bakkebøllestien also passes through Marienlyst.
There are several marked hiking trails in Vintersbølle Skov in the vicinity of Bakkebølle. These include Heart Paths and the regional Sjællandsleden route. The coastal path in Vintersbølle Skov runs along cliffs up to 10 m high. Many crooked beeches and oaks line this section; especially before the leaves emerge, views of the sea open up between the trees.
Beach on the Storstrømmen
Bakkebølle has a beach with a bathing jetty. Bakkebølle Strand is a family-friendly sandy beach directly by the holiday-home area on the Storstrømmen. From there, you can see the Farø Bridges. Alongside the forest and coastal paths, this puts a clearly maritime setting at the centre, where you can experience the landscape of the strait from a different perspective.
Stone Age sites around Bakkebølle
One of the historical points of reference is the archaeological monument “Dysse eller jættestue, Bakkebølle”. It is a protected Stone Age site, dated to 3950–2801 BCE. Langhøj, etc., Bakkebølle (#2) is a Stone Age long barrow and is likewise dated to 3950–2801 BCE. It measures approximately 10.9 × 15 m. Its burial chamber consists of five supporting stones and one capstone.
Rundhøj, etc., Bakkebølle (#1) is a Stone Age round barrow, dated to 3950–2801 BCE. It has an unexcavated chamber with a large capstone and large kerbstones. For planning purposes, the sites can therefore be considered according to different historical forms: the long barrow and the round barrow each represent their own architectural expression among Bakkebølle’s Stone Age remains.
Local history and orientation
Bakkebølle Sprøjtehus was built in 1865. It is located on Bakkebøllevej between house numbers 39 and 43 and formerly served as the site of the local fire engine. Its former function is therefore just as much a part of the local character as the Stone Age sites and the historic railway line.
Bakkebøllestien was preserved after the Kalvehavebanen railway was closed in 1959. In the vicinity of Bakkebølle Strand, Ørnehøj is located approximately 400 m to the north. These two details help place your stay in context: the area combines a lasting transport history with visible landscape and cultural connections, without requiring you to limit yourself to just one way of exploring.
For further travel orientation, you can also consider Askeby, Mern, Klintholm Havn, Præstø, Roneklint, Stavreby, Stensved and Borre.
