Bogø By: Discover Maritime Houses, the Windmill and the Coast

Bogø By showcases its maritime side at the harbour and in the streetscape. At the same time, hiking trails, historic buildings, coastal access points and regional cuisine offer various ways to experience the town.

Maritime streetscape along Bogø Hovedgade

Stately captains’ villas and smaller shipowners’ houses line Bogø Hovedgade, some of them displaying ship names on their façades. Bogø By’s maritime connections are therefore clearly reflected in the streetscape. Hovedgade follows the direction of the ridge; the venerable Navigationsskole is also located along it. The street, houses and Navigationsskole give the town a maritime character that can be directly experienced during a walk by focusing on specific buildings.

Harbour, ferry and activities on the water

Bogø Havn is located in the Grønsund and offers a beautiful view of the Farøbroen. The history of the connection between Bogø and Stubbekøbing includes the wooden ferry Ida: it was completed in 1959 and was ready to operate between the two places. The ferry crossing took 12 minutes. Færgen Ida is also one of Denmark’s oldest wooden ferries. These historical details make Bogø By’s maritime transport history a distinct aspect of a visit to the town, without presupposing that ferry services operate today.

There are also specific starting points for activities on the water. From Skåningebro, you can launch a kayak and paddle around Bogø and Farø. At Bogø Fyr, there are good opportunities to launch kayaks and canoes. There is also easy access to the coast there, including for anglers and divers.

Hiking trails for short and long stages

The Sporet på Bogø hiking trail begins at Bogø harbour and is approximately 7.4 kilometres long. It is open to pedestrians but not to cyclists. Another 175-kilometre hiking route runs across Møn, Bogø and Nyord. The clear differences between the shorter route and the long route help you choose whether to focus your planning on a manageable walk or on longer days of hiking.

Bogø Mølle and the view across the Grønsund

Bogø Mølle stands in Bogø By and offers an expansive view across the Grønsund as far as Falster. The windmill was built in 1852 after the earlier windmill from 1696 burned down. Those interested in architectural history and landscapes can consider both aspects at this location: a tangible testament to the history of windmills and the expansive view across the water.

BogøBrød: Sourdough, delicacies and pizza

BogøBrød is a sourdough bakery where everything is baked from scratch using organic and regional ingredients. Breakfast and lunch are served there, and selected delicacies are also sold. BogøBrød’s evening café serves Italian pizza from a wood-fired stone oven.
