Borre – Chalk Cliffs, Forest Paths and History on Møn

If you choose Borre as a destination on the Baltic Sea, an impressive chalk landscape takes center stage. Møns Klint is a coastal landscape of chalk formed by glaciotectonic processes during the Weichselian glaciation. The white cliffs rise up to 128 meters above the turquoise-green sea and stretch along a seven-kilometer coastline. Borre is therefore particularly well suited to a travel itinerary combining nature, hiking and cultural-historical experiences.

Hiking Trails Between Cliffs, Forest and Beach

Møns Klint has seven marked hiking trails ranging from 2.2 to 9 kilometers in length. One longer option is Klintekongens Rige: This 14-kilometer hiking route leads through Klinteskoven, Liselund’s romantic garden and Møns Klint. Klinteskoven also has an easy 5.4-kilometer route that follows the forest paths and includes a detour to Aborrebjerg. It is suitable for beginners and less experienced hikers.

Dronningestolen is the name of a viewpoint at the highest cliff overlook in Klinteskoven. From there, the cliff drops almost vertically 128 meters to the beach. Five stairways along the route between Liselund in the north and Møns Fyr in the south provide access from the cliff-top path to the beach below. The beach at Møns Klint offers good opportunities for fossil hunting; remains of sea urchins and belemnites, among others, can be found.

Natural Area with Forest, Heathland and Orchids

Klinteskoven is a public forest. Most of it is designated as natural forest and managed in an environmentally sensitive way for the benefit of birds, fungi and insects. The lime-rich soil also allows several species of wild-growing orchids to thrive. Jydelejet complements this natural area with its gentle, rounded valley and cultivated heathland. The area is maintained through cattle grazing and the removal of unwanted trees and shrubs. The chalk soil lying close beneath the surface provides favorable growing conditions there for several orchid species, including the fly orchid, the white helleborine and the red helleborine.

Historic Sites and Family Experiences

Timmesøbjerg is a hilltop refuge near Møns Klint; traces from the Bronze Age and Iron Age have been found there. The site is included on the list of Denmark’s 100 finest prehistoric monuments. Liselund Castle Park is considered Denmark’s best-preserved romantic garden. The story of its founder, the nobleman Antoine de la Calmette, and his beloved wife Lisa is told there.

GeoCenter Møns Klint is built into the cliff and designed as an exciting journey 70 million years back in time. It is accessible to wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility and offers an accessible toilet, accessible parking spaces, a changing table, as well as free wheelchair and stroller rentals.

Cycling and Hiking Trails Around Borre

During opening hours, Borre Church offers cyclists a place to take a break, refill drinking water and use a bicycle pump. A combined cycling and hiking trail through Klinteskoven connects Camping Møns Klint and the GeoCenter.
