Discover Præstø by the Fjord

Præstø Fjord provides a maritime gateway to Præstø. Along the fjord, there are so-called fjord stations where you can experience nature, culture, and the landscape up close. These three themes are found side by side there, making the fjord a multifaceted part of the town’s character.

At the Præstø Strand fjord station, there is an accessible toilet and a gravel path suitable for wheelchairs. When planning a specific route with a wheelchair, the gravel surface at Præstø Strand can be taken into account directly.

Paths between the Fjord and the Town

There are two different routes available for walks. The “Den Blå Rute” route is a 2.5 km walking path around the former island in the fjord, where Præstø was originally founded. The 2.5 km distance helps with planning the fjord circuit and gives the walk a defined scope. The duration of around one hour for the Antonitterrute can be incorporated directly into a town walk. A town walk through historic Præstø follows the Antonitterrute and takes around one hour. This offers everything from a walk in the fjord area to a historic town walk.

Historic Townscape and Art

Præstø Torv is an exceptionally well-preserved and carefully maintained cultural environment. Præstø Church consists of a nave and a west tower from the late 15th century, as well as a series of chapels from the early 16th century.

The permanent exhibition at Thorvaldsen Samlingen på Nysø includes 52 plaster works by Thorvaldsen, 25 of his drawings, and a number of unique clay models from his working process. Alongside the historic townscape, Thorvaldsen’s artistic working process is therefore also a central focus.

At Nysø Have, visitors can go for a walk and enjoy the view over Præstø Fjord. For a visit to the garden, the fjord view can be planned directly as a focus of the walk. Fransk Forår is a recurring event held in the cobbled squares and streets of Præstø. Both the places and the events connect your stay with the landscape and the town’s public spaces.

Gyldne Dage in Præstø is a festival about 19th-century culture, history, and crafts. Brandmuseet, which displays historic firefighting equipment, is located at Præstø Harbour. At the workshop of Pottemageriet Rødeled, visitors can watch a pot or jug being made.

Water, Crafts, and Culture

Fishing is possible in Præstø Fjord. Fishing is available in the same fjord where the fjord stations are located. Together with the fjord stations, walking routes, the cultural environment around the Torv, museums, and crafts, this creates a thematic range that combines experiences of nature, local history, and practical observation.
