Vordingborg between castle history, harbor views and nature

Vordingborg combines castle history with green paths and a townscape by the water. Specific places include Gåsetårnet, the castle ruins, the Historic Botanical Garden, Gåsegangen and Kirkeskoven. This means that getting your bearings in the town ranges from historic sites and marked paths to natural areas.

Gåsetårnet and Danmarks Borgcenter

Danmarks Borgcenter, an interactive experience center, is located at the foot of Gåsetårnet. Visitors can climb the 36-meter-high Gåsetårnet, and the ascent offers impressive views. Gåsetårnet is the only surviving tower of the former castle in Vordingborg. A digital audio guide allows visitors to customize their experience.

Danmarks Borgcenter offers creative activities such as drawing, painting and mural painting. In the outdoor area, possible activities include walking on stilts, dressing up and building.

GÃ¥segangen and the castle ruins

The marked GÃ¥segangen is a 1.3-kilometer historic town walk through Vordingborg. The circular route begins and ends at Slotstorvet. At this length, the route can be planned as a town walk in its own right. The fixed starting and ending point at Slotstorvet provides a clear framework for planning the day.

The castle ruins are suitable for walking, learning more about the history and having a picnic. The underground remains of Sankt Andreas Church have been reconstructed above ground in their original structure at the site, allowing visitors to walk around them. Near the restored walls, visitors can stop and enjoy the view of the water and the Oringe peninsula.

Kirkeskoven and protected areas

Kirkeskoven is an old deciduous forest in the middle of Vordingborg. From there, it is possible to walk from the ruins to the railway station. The forest offers opportunities for walks and runs year-round, as well as footpaths, trails and a nature playground. The connection from the ruins to the railway station thus complements the paths within the forest area with a specific connection to the town.

In 2022, 12 hectares in Kirkeskoven and Kirkeengen were placed under protection; the areas remain open to the public.

Botanical Garden, natural harbor and railway station

The Historic Botanical Garden was established in 1921 as Denmark’s first garden of its kind and was designed by G.N. Brandt. Rådhusparken has a nature playground.

Vordingborg Nordhavn is a natural harbor. From Vordingborg Nordhavn, there are views of the Farøbroerne and Danmarks Borgcenter with Gåsetårnet. Danmarks Borgcenter is a ten-minute walk from Vordingborg St. railway station. The ten minutes therefore represent a specific walking time for the connection from the railway station to the castle center.
