Karlshamn
The town of Karlshamn was founded at the behest of Swedish King Charles X Gustav, immediately after the province of Blekinge passed from Denmark to Sweden in 1658. Karlshamn lies in the Blekinge archipelago on the southern Baltic coast and became an important port for Swedish emigrants in the 19th century; a monument at the harbor commemorates this. The main characters in the film adaptation of Vilhelm Moberg’s novel *The Emigrants* also left their homeland, Sweden, via Karlshamn.
As a tourist destination, Karlshamn owes much to its archipelago, a chain of small islands stretching from the western edge of Karlshamn Municipality to the eastern edge of neighboring Karlskrona Municipality. Hundreds of small islands, including the largest, Tjärö and Tärnö, invite visitors to enjoy a varied active holiday on Sweden’s Baltic coast. The car-free island of Tjärö is considered a lively summer destination. Take a rowing boat out on a fishing trip or moor at a quiet swimming spot, and make use of one of the many barbecue areas—that’s a Baltic holiday in Sweden at its best! Passenger boats to Tjärö run from Järnavik and Karlshamn. Tärnö is the outermost island in the Blekinge archipelago. It was inhabited for a long time and comes alive again during the summer season. The island’s unique attractions include numerous traces of earlier settlement, such as former quarries and Sweden’s last operating wooden lighthouse, as well as remarkable natural features like the flint fields and a rock shaped like an old man.
Some of the archipelago’s islands are protected as bird sanctuaries, while others are popular destinations for recreational sailors and boat passengers.
The mainland around Karlshamn also offers the variety of natural scenery typical of Sweden’s Baltic coast. Eriksberg Wildlife and Nature Park offers a glimpse of the diverse flora and fauna; the giant potholes at Tararp reveal traces of the immediate post-glacial period; the citadel on the fortress island at the harbor entrance evokes the region’s war-torn past; and salmon can be fished in the rapids of the River Mörrumsån in the district of Mörrum. Numerous holiday homes in Karlshamn and the surrounding area offer the comfort typical of Sweden for a Baltic coast vacation.
