Assens

The small town of Assens lies on the west coast of the Danish island of Funen, right by the Little Belt. This strait connects the Baltic Sea with its northern outer waters, the Kattegat. The Little Belt separates the islands of the Danish “South Sea,” including Funen and Ærø, from the mainland of the Jutland peninsula. The holiday town of Assens lies halfway between Middelfart at the crossing to Jutland and Faaborg in southwestern Funen. Assens is around 800 years old and has a harbor. Up to 600 pleasure boats and yachts can moor here, and the harbor is also the departure point for a car ferry that sails to the nearby island of Bågø four times a day. The old town, with its historic buildings, is exceptionally well preserved and invites the many holidaymakers to take a stroll through the past. A miniature model of the town brings its history to life.

The picturesque surroundings are the perfect setting for a relaxing, active family holiday by the Baltic Sea, as the many holiday homes and campsites in the area offer plenty of affordable accommodation—with the comfort that Danish holiday homes are renowned for. In and around Assens, expansive child-friendly Baltic beaches, meadows and forests inland for hiking, the urban setting of Assens, the village atmosphere of the small local communities, and glimpses into the region’s past all come together. There are fishing opportunities on the island of Helnæs, south of Assens, which is connected to the mainland by a causeway. At the medieval castle ruins of Hagenskov near Ebberup, southeast of Assens, visitors can explore an old dungeon.

Several unique museums invite holidaymakers and visitors to explore. They include an art collection, a museum devoted to Ĺ koda cars, a flax and linen-weaving museum, and a collection of historic cars such as Aston Martins and Rolls-Royces. The bird park and terrarium are a draw for animal lovers. Those looking for an active holiday can enjoy golf courses, canoe rental stations, riding stables, tennis courts, and an extensive network of hiking and cycling trails. Assens, on the west coast of the Danish Baltic island of Funen, is a holiday destination whose range of tourist services and accommodation leaves little to be desired.
