Höganäs Kullen
The small town of Höganäs lies in the southern part of Sweden’s west coast, in the northwest of the province of Skåne, and forms the gateway to the Kullen Peninsula. The Kullen Peninsula extends far into the Kattegat, part of the Baltic Sea, and continues the Öresund along the Swedish coast. It is a popular destination for holidaymakers and day-trippers, and one of the best-known excursion spots in southern Sweden. Höganäs is synonymous with Sweden’s ceramic tradition. This tradition grew out of the deposits of coal and clay in the area around Höganäs and continues to this day. The distinctive salt-glazed ceramics are brownish-red to black in colour. They are also a popular souvenir for holidaymakers spending their Baltic Sea vacation around Höganäs and on the Kullen Peninsula. Visitors are welcome to watch the potters at work. This tradition is also very much alive in the townscape. Visitors will find ceramic monuments and plaques in various locations, forming a permanent exhibition throughout Höganäs. These include a memorial in the harbour commemorating the reception of Danish and German refugees during the German occupation of Denmark in World War II. The town has an extensive harbour area divided into a guest harbour, a fishing harbour and an industrial harbour. There is also a bathing area within the town.
The Kullen Peninsula offers an exceptional variety of attractions for holidaymakers and day-trippers. Its rugged rock formations make a spectacular centrepiece. At the northwestern tip, the Kullen Lighthouse (Kullens fyr) sends its beam from almost 90 metres above sea level, reaching up to 46 kilometres. Kullen’s highest point stands at 187 metres, offering expansive views across the Kattegat, part of the Baltic Sea. The northern side of Kullen is marked by rocky caves, which visitors can explore after an adventurous hike. Near the small village of Mölle, you will find not only a beach but also Krapperup Castle. Dating from the 15th century, it is now a venue for summer concerts and art exhibitions. The garden, laid out in the English style, is well worth a visit. The old beech forest on Kullen provides a striking contrast to the rocky coast.
Kullen is an ideal destination for an active holiday. As well as rock climbing and surfing, diving is also available here. Numerous holiday homes, holiday apartments, hotels and campsites provide plenty of accommodation for holidays in and around Höganäs and Kullen.
