Söderhamn
The town of Söderhamn lies on Sweden’s Baltic coast, about 75 kilometers north of Gävle. Surrounded by extensive forests and waterways, Söderhamn is set amid the natural landscape, dotted with holiday homes as elsewhere in Sweden. Despite its northerly location, Söderhamn is surrounded by swimming spots and campsites, as well as recreational facilities that can be enjoyed in both summer and winter. Sweden’s major north–south routes, European Route E4 and the Coastal Line railway, pass through Söderhamn.
Söderhamn is located in the province of Hälsingland and, with a population of around 26,000, is one of the region’s largest towns. The archipelago off the Baltic coast comprises 500 islands and is a paradise for water sports such as sailing, surfing and canoeing in summer, as well as ice skating in winter. South of Söderhamn, the River Ljusnan flows into the Baltic Sea after passing through two beautiful inland lakes. This creates a connected network of waterways for an active holiday in northern Sweden on the Baltic coast. Söderhamn is particularly popular with canoeists, as the area around the town is an excellent place for canoeing, promising endless paddling enjoyment in a sparsely populated region. The Testeboån is the canoeing waterway here, and it also offers holidays for the whole family.
The municipality of Söderhamn is home to Norrland’s deepest ice-free harbor, at Orrskär. The town itself was founded only in 1620 by Gustav II Adolf and for a long time served as an arms manufactory for the Swedish kingdom. The Oscarborg observation tower is the town’s landmark. After several devastating fires and carefully planned reconstruction, Söderhamn has become known as a city of parks. Numerous works of art in public spaces offer holidaymakers and visitors variety as well as plenty of room for imagination. The town museum is housed in a former rifle factory.
The coastal stretch from Gävle through Söderhamn toward Sundsvall is also known as the Maiden Coast. A 300-kilometer hiking trail with routes of varying difficulty runs along it, with sections passing through Söderhamn. This coast around Söderhamn is dotted with many former small fishing villages, now popular destinations for visitors who want to enjoy freshly caught fish in an unspoiled setting or get a glimpse of how people lived in the past.
Located roughly halfway along Sweden’s Baltic coast, Söderhamn is a varied destination for a Baltic Sea holiday in Sweden, with accommodation options including holiday homes, hotels and campsites.
