Södertälje Trosa

About 25 kilometres south of the Swedish capital, Stockholm, lies Södertälje, at the E4/E20 motorway junction and at the end of a long, narrow inlet of the Baltic Sea. Södertälje belongs to Stockholm County, although it is located in the historic province of Södermanland. Södertälje is known as an industrial city and is home to the headquarters of truck manufacturer Scania. The city is also easily accessible by water: a canal connects Lake Mälaren to the Baltic Sea. As part of the Mälaren Valley, Södertälje is surrounded by numerous holiday homes, campsites and swimming spots along its many inlets.

The city’s main attraction for visitors is probably the Tom Tits Experiment exhibition. More than 600 experiments are presented across four floors of a former industrial building, making it Sweden’s largest and most interesting science centre. You can experience astonishing natural phenomena with all your senses—for example, ride a bicycle on the wall or be spun around inside the world’s largest robot. Scania’s visitor centre is named after Swedish industrialist Marcus Wallenberg. Among other things, it displays the first Swedish passenger car to be mass-produced.

The varied coastal landscape around Södertälje offers plenty of opportunities for an active holiday, with designated cycling and hiking trails, swimming spots and marinas. A particularly interesting trip heads south to the well-known seaside resort of Trosa. On the way, right by the water, stands Tullgarn Palace, dating from the 18th century and one of the most magnificent palaces of its kind in Sweden.

The town of Trosa is also known as the “end of the world”, as there is only one road into this small town on a promontory in the Baltic Sea. Once a fishing village, it is now a centre for seaside tourism on Sweden’s Baltic coast, welcoming thousands of holidaymakers and summer visitors. The marina is a popular port of call for recreational boaters, holiday homes and campsites around Trosa are ready to welcome visitors to Sweden, and two golf courses offer further ways to enjoy an active holiday. Every year on Ascension Day, Trosa becomes a meeting place for sea anglers, who crowd the quays as enthusiastic spectators cheer them on. In Södertälje and Trosa, urban charm and quintessential Swedish nature come together to make for an eventful holiday on Sweden’s Baltic coast.
