Kokkola / Karleby

The city of Kokkola (Swedish: Karleby) lies on the Baltic coast of the Gulf of Bothnia in Finland’s Ostrobothnia region. Together with its scenic surroundings, it is a popular destination for a Baltic Sea holiday in Finland. The city was founded in 1620 at the initiative of Swedish King Gustav II Adolf, under the name Gamlakarleby. At the time, Finland was part of the Swedish Kingdom. Kokkola marks the northern end of Finland’s Swedish-speaking settlement area. The city originally thrived on the foreign trade in tar and on shipping. To this day, Kokkola has one of the most important harbours on Finland’s coast of the Gulf of Bothnia.

Things to see in Kokkola

As in other comparable towns, Kokkola was repeatedly destroyed by fires, leaving only a few historic buildings. The most notable of these is the old school building, which now houses a museum. It is one of the oldest surviving wooden buildings in all of Scandinavia. Every year, on the last weekend in August, the Venetian Nights are celebrated, bidding farewell to summer with a grand spectacle.

Holidays in Kokkola

The natural surroundings of the city are well equipped for tourist activities. There is a wide range of signposted hiking trails, paddling routes through the archipelago, boating routes, horse-riding trails and, in winter, cross-country ski tracks. The island of Öja lies just off the city to the southwest. It is part of the archipelago, which accounts for much of Kokkola’s appeal as a destination for a Baltic Sea holiday in Finland.

Kokkola is very easy to reach and is therefore an excellent base for a Baltic Sea holiday in Finland. The harbour, railway, roads and Kruunupyy airfield offer convenient travel options to suit every need. The combination of modern infrastructure and beautiful natural surroundings makes Kokkola a popular Baltic Sea holiday destination all year round.
