Uusikaupunki / Nystad
The small town of Uusikaupunki (Swedish: Nystad) lies in southwestern Finland, right on the coast of the Baltic Sea’s Gulf of Bothnia. It is in the northern part of the southwestern Finnish archipelago, the largest of its kind in the world. Uusikaupunki was founded in 1617, when Finland was part of Sweden, at the initiative of King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden, under the name Nystad. The Treaty of Nystad was signed here in 1721, ending the Great Northern War, which had lasted 21 years.

Things to see in Uusikaupunki
The old church, dating from 1629, is the oldest surviving building in the town. The Automobile Museum highlights Uusikaupunki’s distinction as Finland’s only automobile manufacturing site. Among other things, visitors will find the world’s largest collection of SAAB cars here. Several museums introduce visitors to local history and specific aspects of it, including the Cultural History Museum, the Pilot Museum, the Seaman’s House and the Shelter Museum. After several devastating fires, the town was rebuilt in the mid-19th century. Most of the wooden houses in the town centre date from that period and today form an attractive ensemble in the Empire style. The Baltic Sea extends inland in a long bay as far as the town centre. The waterfront area is especially popular with tourists and holidaymakers during the summer months, offering a pleasant place for a leisurely stroll.
Holidays in and around Uusikaupunki
The unspoilt character of the archipelago alone draws many holidaymakers to the Baltic coast around Uusikaupunki. Two possible excursions deserve special mention. In summer, excursion boats travel to the lighthouse island of Isokari, about 30 kilometres away, as well as to the fortress island of Katanpää. Several guest harbours in and around Uusikaupunki also welcome recreational boaters arriving on their own. Seal-watching safaris in the archipelago are another option for visitors to the Baltic coast. The many islands in and around Uusikaupunki offer opportunities for fishing, boating, playing Frisbee golf and going on off-road safaris. A holiday in and around Uusikaupunki means a varied and relaxing family activity holiday on Finland’s Baltic coast, with plenty of leisure activities—whether you stay in a hotel, holiday home, farmhouse or campsite.
