Uusikaupunki: Wooden House District, Cultural History Trail and Nature
Accommodation in Uusikaupunki
In Uusikaupunki, Kaupunginlahti Bay reaches into the city centre. Along its waterfront promenade, maritime terms, ship names and information boards tell the story of the city. There is also a large wooden house district, museums and natural attractions nearby. To shape your trip, you can choose between city history by the water, culture and trails through nature.
Wooden houses and maritime city history
In the city centre, the wooden house district includes more than 40 blocks of wooden houses and over 600 pastel-coloured wooden houses. It is considered one of Finland’s best-preserved Empire-style wooden towns. This means that Uusikaupunki is home not just to a single historic building, but to an entire district of wooden houses. Along the Kaupunginlahti waterfront promenade, maritime terms and ship names illustrate Uusikaupunki’s maritime history. There are also ten smaller information boards with photographs and entertaining stories. Various restaurants and terraces are located in the old waterfront warehouses along the bay.
Cultural history trail and museums
The cultural history trail in Uusikaupunki is about four kilometres long and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. There are 34 different stops along the route. A brochure is available in Finnish, German and Russian. If you are interested in the city’s history and would like to follow the trail in German, this is a suitable language option. The approximate length and the option to complete the route on foot or by bicycle can help you fit it into your travel plans.
The Uusikaupunki Automobile Museum offers a subject of its own: across three exhibition halls, it displays an extensive selection of classic cars, along with other exhibits on automobiles and motor sports. The Bonk Museum adds a hands-on activity for children to the city’s museum offerings. At its Innovatorium, they can design and build their own Bonk machines. The exhibitions at Runonkulman Gallery change monthly, offering another cultural highlight that varies throughout the year.
Nature trails nearby
Nature experiences can also be a focus of your trip. The accessible nature trail at Kasarminlahti leads into the forest and down to the water in a safe setting. The area is rich in birdlife and serves as a resting place for migratory birds. At Hiunjärvi, a regionally significant bird lake, there is a marked nature trail, a lean-to shelter and a birdwatching tower. The longer loop is about 3.8 kilometres long, and the shorter one about 3.2 kilometres. If you would like to choose a route by its length, there are two different options.
The nearby Art House Pilvilinna is another place to visit. There, an art trail leads through the forest, and the garden has a rosary with hundreds of roses. Another historic destination for an excursion is Katanpää Fortress Island in Kustavi, which is part of the Bothnian Sea National Park. Its fortress buildings, including the cobblestone road and wooden water tower, are protected under the Antiquities Act.
