Förkärla can be explored through specific hiking and cultural themes. Those choosing a stay based on their interests in nature and history will find a variety of points of interest here: named hiking trails, a nature reserve, burial grounds, a cemetery, and a dated church artifact. The Hjortahammarsleden connects the Hjortahammar burial ground with Förkärla Church; the Förkärlaleden adds forest, a view of a bird lake, and a deer enclosure as trail features. The Hjortahammarsleden, a hiking trail, passes the burial mounds at Saltäng; the triumphal cross in Förkärla Church dates from 1530.

Hiking trails with different highlights

The Hjortahammarsleden is five kilometers long and runs between the Hjortahammar burial ground and Förkärla Church. Its first section passes through the Vambåsa hagmarker Nature Reserve; the trail also passes the burial mounds at Saltäng. So it is not only the two endpoints that matter: along the way, you will also encounter a protected natural area and an archaeological point of interest. The route can therefore be described both by its connection between the burial ground and the church and by the features along the trail.

The Förkärlaleden features different landscapes. A six-kilometer section runs through the forest and offers a viewpoint overlooking the bird lake. A section of the Förkärlaleden heads south from Förkärla Church through a deer enclosure. These two trail descriptions allow you to compare landscape features, but not total lengths: five kilometers describes the Hjortahammarsleden between its endpoints, while six kilometers refers only to a section of the Förkärlaleden. If you are choosing based on specific features, the burial ground and burial mounds along the Hjortahammarsleden contrast with the forest section, bird lake viewpoint, and deer enclosure along the Förkärlaleden. Check route details locally before setting out.

Hjortahammar and its burial grounds

The Hjortahammar burial ground lies in the Vambåsa hagmarker Nature Reserve and is one of three larger burial grounds in the Förkärla parish. About 120 structures are visible on the narrow promontory where the burial ground is located; many more lie underground. These two scales complement each other: the parish provides the regional context, while the narrow promontory identifies the specific location of the burial ground. The difference between visible and underground structures also makes clear that what can be seen on the surface is only part of the burial ground.

Förkärla Church and cemetery

Förkärla Church is also one of the two endpoints of the Hjortahammarsleden. The triumphal cross in the church was made in 1530, placing the artwork in the 16th century. Today, the cemetery in Förkärla has more than 400 graves as well as a memorial grove. The local history is thus represented by both a historic individual artifact and a cemetery with its current number of graves and memorial grove.
