When choosing a Baltic Sea destination, landscape, wildlife and culture play different roles. Gullholma offers specific points of interest in each of these areas: walking routes lead through the nearby Hallarumsviken Nature Reserve, while seasonal birdwatching is the focus at Torhamns udde. Land404, an artist-run platform for contemporary art, was founded in Gullholma. These themes can help you tailor your stay to your personal interests.

Hiking and nature conservation around Gullholma

Hallarumsviken Nature Reserve is located near Gullholma and offers hiking through a varied landscape. It includes rock slabs, oak scrubland, steep slopes and open pastures, as well as views of Blekinge’s inner archipelago. If you enjoy experiencing different landscapes on your hikes, this is a place to connect with nature.

Gullholma is part of the Björkenäs-Klakebäck section of the Blekinges östkust area, which is designated as being of national interest for nature conservation. A description of the area’s conservation values dated 17 March 2023 highlights some of the most well-developed, species-rich and well-maintained coastal meadows on Blekinge’s east coast in this section.

Hallarumsviken is also home to the remains of two historic crofts. Together with the open pastures and oak scrubland, they give the landscape a rural and historical character.

A 2023 nature conservation description notes that the largest population of natterjack toads in Blekinge is found near Gullholma and Attanäs. The toads develop in open, shallow coastal marshes that usually dry out in summer. This adds a distinctive coastal habitat with its own seasonal rhythm to the hiking landscape.

Bird migration and seasonal nature experiences

At the tip of Torhamns udde, near Gullholma, is one of Sweden’s best-known birdwatching sites. Here, the sea, coastal meadows and shallow bays meet. In spring and autumn, the bays provide resting places for thousands of migratory birds on their journey across the Baltic Sea. If you want to plan your visit around bird migration, these two seasons offer a clear guide. The walks in Hallarumsviken, by contrast, focus on the varied coastal landscape.

Land404, art and local history

Land404 is an artist-run platform for contemporary art that was founded in Gullholma. An earlier Land404 festival in Gullholma featured music, discussions, lectures and workshops. The exhibition grew out of five artists’ explorations of rural life and the relationship between people and nature. The festival also included site-specific artworks created in a cow pasture. In this way, the festival combined art in the open air with an exhibition exploring rural life and the relationship between people and nature.

Gullholma’s Båtsmanslyckan is also connected to a cadastral map from 1812. Pencil notes on the map document where some of the boatswains lived. This historical trace draws attention to the people and homes behind the coastal landscape.
