Holmsjö combines the convenience of a centrally located railway station with nature at Bredasjön and a remarkable cultural history. The locality is situated in the municipality of Karlskrona in Blekinge and therefore offers various points of interest for a trip: you can plan your journey by train, take the northern part of Holmsjö with its bathing area into account, or explore the history of the old village and Sillhövda Church.

Getting to Holmsjö and finding your way around

Holmsjö railway station is located in the centre of Holmsjö. The Krösatågen trains take you south to Karlskrona and north to Emmaboda. From Emmaboda, there are further train connections to Kalmar, Växjö, Alvesta and Gothenburg. This rail connection is a particularly useful starting point when choosing accommodation if you want to plan your trip around the available train services. This makes it possible to regard Holmsjö as a destination in its own right, rather than defining the locality solely through individual attractions.

Bredasjön and active travel experiences

The sports field and bathing area at Bredasjön are located in the northern part of Holmsjö. They can be reached via the road towards Eringsboda, Road 653. Bredasjön is 4 metres deep and is drained via the Silletorpsån watercourse. This information gives the body of water a specific landscape dimension, while the bathing area provides another focus for planning your day.

In midsummer, the Holmsjö Triathlon takes place at Bredasjön in Holmsjö. The competition is approved by the Swedish Triathlon Federation. Holmsjö Triathlon's triathlon section has existed within SAIK since 2014 and offers the opportunity to try triathlon, including swimming, cycling and running. Those looking for active experiences can take this information into account when planning the timing of their trip. Accommodation in Holmsjö can therefore be combined either with the rail connection or with an interest in activities around Bredasjön.

Sillhövda Church and the history of Holmsjö

For visitors interested in cultural history, Sillhövda Church is an important point of reference. It has a medieval altarpiece dating from around 1480, which is considered the oldest in Blekinge. The present-day Sillhövda Church was inaugurated on 9 December 1945. The bell tower of the former Sillhövda Church was saved from a fire and moved to the cemetery. These different historical periods make it clear that the history of the locality is not limited to a single building or a single era.

Holmsjö is an old village and was first mentioned in 1349 in a deed of gift from King Magnus Eriksson to the Bishop of Växjö. Through this donation, the bishop received eight villages in the parish of Fridlevstad as episcopal table estates. Holmsjö was also situated on the main road from Växjö via Fuhr to the old town of Lyckeby. According to tradition, the tanner Carl Magnus Mårdh moved to Holmsjö in 1830 and gave his name to the tannery there.

Holmsjö as a base for your trip

When looking for accommodation, you can focus on different aspects of Holmsjö: the railway station in the centre of the locality, the northern area by Bredasjön, or the cultural and historical connections relating to the village, church and cemetery. This creates a travel plan that is not based solely on a single attraction, but brings together rail travel, water, sport and history. For comparison with other destinations on the same broader level, you can also find Nävragöl, Ebbenäs, Drottningskär, Nättraby, Ramdala, Rödeby, Fågelmara and Torhamn.
