Literary traces in Jämshög

Jämshög Library has a dedicated room named after the writer Sven Edvin Salje. It houses part of his private library, including books with dedications and calendars containing his own notes. The collection also includes various translations and editions of his books. These different materials give the town’s literary heritage a tangible connection to books and personal records.

Jämshög’s Local Heritage Museum also focuses on the town’s literary history. It presents the lives of Harry Martinson, the Nobel Prize in Literature laureate, and Sven Edvin Salje; exhibitions also show the history of Jämshög. Another literary trace leads to Hantverkaregatan: the 250-metre-long street is depicted in Salje’s novel “Hantverkaregatan”, which takes readers back to his childhood in the 1920s.

Jämshög is being developed as an international book town. Literature, meetings and activities to promote reading are at its heart. In the book town, visitors can explore a second-hand bookshop considered one of the largest in southern Sweden. This offers several points of interest for a culture-focused trip: the collection in the library, the literary displays at the museum and Salje’s connection to the street.

Art with literary themes

“Förspel” stands in the park between Läkarevillan and Hantverkaregatan. This public artwork consists of two book pages, each two and a half metres high. Their shape is reminiscent of a literary plough. The work turns the book motif into a three-dimensional form, giving it a different emphasis from the town’s literary collections and exhibitions.

“Pennans makt” also draws on an image from the world of writing. This artwork at the Jämshög roundabout features a blank sheet of paper and symbolically represents continuing to write the area’s history. Together, the two works show different sides of the theme of literature: one uses book pages as a form, the other writing as an image for history.

Nature and trails around the town

The nearby Halen Nature Reserve is characterised by forests and lakes and is within walking distance of the built-up areas of Jämshög and Olofström. The reserve has hiking trails, running routes and bridleways, as well as picnic areas and shelters. Anyone wishing to include nature and exercise in their trip will find several ways to experience the reserve here.

The nearby Ljungryda Nature Reserve can be reached from Jämshög by bus to Östafors, followed by a walk of just under one kilometre. The closest bus stops to Halen include Nebbebodagården, served by routes 561 and 635, and Jämshögs skola. If you are planning to use public transport, check the current connections before travelling.

The Blekinge Trail also offers a regional connection for hikers: at Blekinge’s western end, it meets the Skåne Trail near Jämshög and Boafall. The Olofström section of the Blekinge Trail is approximately 40 kilometres long. Shelters are available at regular intervals along this section for overnight stays. The natural attractions therefore differ mainly in their setting: Halen combines several activities within one nature reserve, while the Blekinge Trail, with its connection to the Skåne Trail and its shelters, puts the focus on the route.

Townscape and getting around

Jämshög’s centre has retained much of its character from the time when the town was the focal point of an agricultural area. An audio guide for Jämshög Church has been produced by the Diocese of Lund. Check that it is available before your visit. Discover more destinations: Vilshult, Kyrkhult, Olofström.
