Norje combines a stay by the water with an internationally renowned festival and a multifaceted local history. Every June, the Sweden Rock Festival brings 40,000 fans from around the world to Norje for four days. The festival moved to its current home in Norje in Sölvesborg in 1998.

The eastern green section of the cycle route is connected to the Sydostleden; via this route, there is also a connection to the Listerlandet cycle route. From Norje, visitors can follow the Vesankanalen westwards and experience the Vesan landscape.

Historical traces around Norje

Norje also offers several specific points of interest for visitors interested in history. Norje Tingshus served as a courthouse for Listers härad from 1795 to 1918. Connected with Norje’s former court venue is an old inn complex, whose large stone barns are still standing. A bridge from the 18th century has an elaborately designed cast-iron railing and adds a preserved structure to the historic village setting.

Another historical trace is Norje’s former prison. The cells where prisoners were confined have been preserved there. In the Vesan area outside Sölvesborg, remains of a 9,000-year-old fermentation facility were also found, regarded as the oldest of its kind in the Nordic region. This find broadens the perspective from local history to the much older history of how the landscape was used.

Tradition and activities for active days

A local tradition of its own is the annual Julkväll in Norje. During this event, torches are lit and the stone bridge is illuminated; shops and craftspeople take part. If you experience Norje at another time of year, the recurring historical and cultural connections nevertheless remain an important part of the character of the place.
