Birdwatching, Water and Trails in Torhamn

If you would like to combine nature experiences, maritime activities and historical sites, Torhamn offers several clearly distinct options. Torhamns udde is an internationally renowned birdwatching site with numerous breeding and resting birds. There is an observation tower at the tip of the headland; the Torhamns FÃ¥gelstation is located directly beside it. The Torhamns udde hiking trail is 3.4 km long and complements the birdwatching with a manageable walking route.

There are also various options for spending time on the water. Petersvik offers open waters and good wind conditions for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Those looking for a beach stay will find a sandy beach and a long bathing jetty in Petersvik. This should be distinguished from Pettersvik: the child-friendly bathing beach is located about 50 metres from Torhamn guest harbour. The approximate distance is a separate point of orientation and should not be confused with the length of a route.

On Foot, by Bike and on the Water

Torhamn offers several routes of different lengths for active days on holiday. The Torhamn–Kristianopel cycling route is 25.5 km long, making it considerably longer than the hiking trail at Torhamns udde. The Torhamn Loop runs predominantly through sheltered waters. Which of these options suits your stay therefore depends primarily on whether you are looking for a short hike, a longer cycle tour or a route on the water.

Harbour and Connections

Torhamn guest harbour has approximately 20 berths for visiting boats. For seasonal planning, it is important to note that in summer the M/F Ungskär operates the Torhamn–Eastern Archipelago connection. In addition, there are bus connections from Torhamn to Jämjö and Karlskrona.

Rock Carvings and Church History

Just outside Torhamn, Möckleryd is home to Hästhallen, the largest collection of rock carvings in Blekinge. The site contains more than 140 figures, mainly ships, people, animals and cup marks. The rock carvings were created during the Bronze Age, approximately between 1700 and 500 BC. This makes Hästhallen a cultural and historical destination in its own right in the surrounding area, offering a different focus from birdwatching and water sports.

Torhamn itself also has historical art and furnishings to see. Torhamn Church features a monumental mural by Gunnar Torhamn depicting Jesus among the residents of Torhamn. The pulpit dates from the mid-1630s; its canopy bears the monogram of King Christian IV. Thus, the documented experiences range from nature and physical activity to regional history and sacred art.
