Midskov: Coast, History and Hindsholm Rundt

Midskov between Dalby Bay and the fjord coast

Midskov is located on the Skoven Peninsula between Dalby Bay and the fjord coast. Around Dalby Bay, an approximately six-kilometre-long and varied stretch of coastline extends near Midskov. This section includes deep depressions, stones, sandy areas and diverse ground vegetation. As a result, the coastline changes several times between open sand, stony ground and vegetated sections. Those exploring the coast can use this change in ground surfaces and ground vegetation as a guide for their own observations. For a day by the coast, the approximately six-kilometre-long stretch can be divided into several sections with changing ground surfaces. When observing the Midskov coast, the order of the individual sections can be left to your own pace. The coastal stretch can thus be planned as a separate part of the day with changing landscape observations.

Clearing village and Bronze Age find

Midskov is a clearing village established by settlers from Mesinge. The place is also considered an excellent example of good northern Funen building tradition. A sacrificial find from the Late Bronze Age was discovered near Midskov. The find comprises seven gold bowls and is dated to approximately 1100 to approximately 500 BC. Visitors interested in culture can focus on settlement history, building tradition or the Bronze Age. The settlers’ origin in Mesinge provides a specific starting point for the history of the village in Midskov.

Enggård, Gabet and the Lodshusene

There was an earthwork in the fields of Enggård in Midskov, which was levelled in 1850. A road to Gabet is signposted on the peninsula; it leads to Gabet and the Lodshusene. Those travelling in the direction of Gabet can also use the signposted route as a connection to the Lodshusene.

Midskov Shelters

The Midskov Shelters shelter site can be reached by kayak, on foot, by bicycle or by car. At Midskov Shelters, there are two identical shelters of the “Skrubben” type, each offering space for two people. For an overnight stay outdoors, travellers can plan access and occupancy separately. With two shelters and two places in each, this results mathematically in a total occupancy of four people.

Hindsholm Rundt

The Hindsholm Rundt cycling route is approximately 60 kilometres long and slightly hilly. It passes manor houses, burial mounds and natural areas. The distance can be planned as a cycling trip in its own right; the slightly hilly profile can be incorporated into the rhythm of the day. For cyclists who want to combine culture and landscape, these different points of interest lie within the same circuit. The gentle hills can be included in personal stage planning just as the changing destinations along the route can. The circuit can be planned either around the distance or around the sequence of cultural and natural destinations.

Night fishing near Gabet

At the very end of the peninsula near Gabet, there is also one of Funen’s best spots for night fishing. Those planning to go night fishing should head for the very end of the peninsula near Gabet.
