Humble between forests, church history and cycling landscapes

Those who consider Humble for a trip involving nature, cultural history or cycling will find several specific points of interest. Covering 27.4 hectares, the nearby Humble Byskov was established in 1995 on former agricultural land. It has walking trails and a viewpoint. Thus, the forest offers both trails for exercise and a viewpoint as distinct natural attractions.

Forest and exercise

The 1.1-kilometre Sundhedssporet runs through Humble Byskov. Along the route, there is information about physical health as well as simple fitness equipment for various exercises. For active days, this specific route combines exercise with the forest. Its facilities are intended for simple exercises, not for a broader range of sports.

Church and prehistoric landscape

Humble Church was built around the 12th century and still preserves architectural elements from that period. It also has Langeland’s oldest church bell. The bell dates from 1430 and bears the coat of arms of Eric of Pomerania. Both Romanesque doors have also been preserved.

The older history also includes Kong Humbles Grav, a 48.5-metre-long and 8-metre-wide passage grave with 77 large kerbstones. The monument is unusually well preserved; almost all of the kerbstones are still standing. The specific route information is clear: from the car park at Humblevej 26B in Kædeby, it can be reached on foot after 350 metres via the field boundary. This makes it possible to plan a visit to this prehistoric monument with a clear understanding of its location.

Art, dairy and local history

Kunsttårn 8 presents Søren West’s work “Force Majeure”, which was erected in 2024. Humble Dairy was established in 1890 by 102 cooperative members with 700 cows. Humble Dairy is nicknamed “Smørslottet” because of its original façade. The dairy was known for the special cheese “Humble Ost”; it was produced with the help of the dairy’s bacterial flora and a double addition of rennet. Thus, the cultural themes range from a work created in 2024 to architectural and production history.

Transport history is also part of Humble’s story: Langeland’s first and only railway opened in 1911, contributed to Humble’s strong growth and was closed in 1962. This completed chapter adds the influence of an earlier railway to the history of the town.

Cycling route through the hilly landscape

For cyclists, the 30-kilometre cycling route “Coastal Landscapes and Villages” begins in Humble. It quickly leads into the elevated hilly landscape that particularly characterises South Langeland. The route appeals to travellers who want to combine cycling with the distinctive landscape of South Langeland.
