Kragholm between Vejlen and Henninge Nor

Kragholm lies on a narrow land bridge between Vejlen and the inner end of Henninge Nor. From here, there is an unobstructed view north across Vejlen.

Landscape and settlement pattern

Kragholm’s terrain consists of a low ground moraine with a strip of individual hatbakker. At the same time, the village lies along a winding road and has preserved the open settlement pattern typical of clearings villages. With its stone enclosures and hedges, Kragholmvej is a characteristic example of road architecture. If you pay attention to the route, boundaries, and buildings during a walk through the village, Kragholm’s character is therefore revealed not only in individual structures but also in the arrangement of the village.

History between farms and the manor landscape

Kragholm probably emerged in the late Middle Ages through the clearing of woodland along the coast at Henninge. In 1472, Kragholm’s nine farms were small tenant farms liable to pay dues to Fårevejle. In 1812, Kragholm was parcelled into large, irregular blocks. Since substantial new construction has been absent ever since, the village has preserved its open settlement pattern and its defining proximity to the large manor estate. Kragholm was also part of the cultural landscape around Fårevejle.

Several specific building forms deepen this historical impression. Kragholmgård is an intact four-winged farm complex; its dwelling house stands separately to the west of the interconnected farm buildings. From Kragholm, Kragholmvej, lined with stone enclosures and hedges, leads to the avenue of Fårevejle Manor and thus also forms the architectural connection between the village and the manor landscape. Fårevejle’s present main building was erected in 1868 in the Renaissance style, while brick portals decorated with lions mark the entrance to the estate. Kragholmvej 33 is also one of the village’s illustrative details, with its three-winged farm, brick-built, tiled-roof dwelling house, and thatched half-timbered outbuildings.

Øhavsstien and historic waypoints

The Øhavsstien hiking trail runs through Kragholm and there turns into the forest belonging to Fårevejle Hovedgård. The hill known as Iskælderbakken lies in this forest. A brick-built cellar once stood on the hill, where blocks of ice collected in winter were stored. The ice was used to cool food well into the summer.

The Øhavsstien - 13 section passes Kragholm Huse and Fårevejle Manor and continues to the embanked Henninge Nor. There are no parking spaces in the immediate vicinity of Øhavsstien - 13.
