Nordstrand: Coast, Hiking Trails and Djævlestenen

At the northernmost point of Langeland lies Hou Nordstrand. The coastal area is divided into an eastern and a western section, which can be reached via different routes. The eastern part of Hou Nordstrand is accessible via Hou Plantage. Houvej leads to the western part; there is a car park for beach visitors nearby. Slude Strand is located in the vicinity of Nordstrand.

Hiking between the Forest and the North Coast

For active days, the forests of northern Langeland offer several signposted hiking trails. They lead through Vestre Stigtehave, Bræmlevænge and Mørkholm Skov. The routes are 3.5 km, 1.6 km and 2.7 km long, respectively. The different distances help you plan a suitable length for each hiking day, without the trails having to become a uniform experience. The three lengths specify different distances for a day of hiking: There are 1.9 km between the shortest and the longest trail, while the middle figure is 2.7 km. When planning a hiking day, the distances can be taken into account separately.

Another 2 km hike leads through Hov Østerstrand and follows the traces of the Bromme culture along Langeland’s north coast. Hov Østerstrand is an open natural area owned by the Danish Nature Agency. At this destination, coastal landscape, natural surroundings and a cultural-historical connection therefore come together directly in the route description. The 2 km of this route stand alongside the three forest trails of 1.6 km, 2.7 km and 3.5 km.

A circular hiking trail begins at Hou Nordstrand, passes Franke Klint and a lighthouse, reaches Hou Fyr and ends back at the starting point.

Forests and the Bronze Age at Hollænderhus

Hollænderhus features an exhibition about the forests of northern Langeland. The Bronze Age Djævlestenen is also located there. The stone is decorated with more than 100 so-called cup marks, dating from the Late Bronze Age, approximately from the period between 1000 and 500 BC.

Djævlestenen weighs 3.5 tonnes and was split into two parts at some point. A visit to Hollænderhus thus combines the exhibition about the forests with a tangible testimony from the Bronze Age. This creates an excursion destination where natural and cultural interests stand side by side, without both subjects having to be experienced in the same way.
